It’s been quite the season for the Harlem high school wrestling team. But it got even better this weekend.

 

    Saturday in Chester, Harlem captured the Northern B-C divisional championship, scoring 142.5 points to edge Cut Bank, which scored 139. In a very tight race, the Chinook Sugarbeeters finished a close third with 135 points, while Conrad was just one and a half points behind them with 133.5.

    The Wildcats, which came in ranked behind Cut Bank in the latest Class B-C Poll, powered to the title behind four individual champions, including Shay Snider’s victory over Cut Bank’s Kyle Berkram in the 112-pound championship match. Snider was ranked second behind Berkram, but he prevailed the in the title match to help his Wildcats to the championship.

    As expected, Teague Jones was also victorious for Harlem, as he defeated Conrad’s Blaine Berg in the 125-pound title match. At 215 pounds, Seth Adams battled his way to a divisional championship by beating Conrad’s Justin Ratzburg in the final. Harlem also got a big win by Brenden Johnson at 135 pounds, as he beat Cut Bank’s Reid Vandenbos.

    IN all, the Wildcats moved seven wrestlers into the finals, and placed eight overall. Finishing second for Harlem was T’Jay Allen at 119 pounds, Denton Cornell at 160 and Cody Blackcrow at 189.  Gus Taylor placed fourth for the Wildcats at 119.

    It was also a big day for the Beeters, who got two individual titles and advanced 10 grapplers to this week’s state tournament. As expected, Rob Klingaman claimed the 189-pound title Saturday, beating Seth Adams in the final. Chinook also doubled up at 98 pounds with Donovan Moon defeating teammate Garrison Mitchell in the final. Wyatt Brandel reached the 130-pound championship match for Chinook before falling to Cut Bank’s Travis Vermlum.

    Also moving on for the Beeters will be Jake Norby, who placed third at 112 pounds, Owen Powell, who finished fourth at 125, Geoff Qualls, who took third at 135, Ken Pruttis, who took fourth at 145, Jessen Dannels, who finished third at 160 and Kevin Young, who placed third at 189.

    With limited numbers, Big Sandy and Chester/J-I also showed strong Saturday afternoon.

    The Pioneers finished with 73 points and crowned champions in Adrian Gasvoda at 160 pounds and Lane Martin at 171. Dusty Gasvoda finished second at 152 and Jacob Schuster placed fourth at 140.

    The Hawks got an individual title from Shalon Norick, who defeated Shelby’s Cody Nelson in the heavyweight final. Overall, C/J-I scored 52 points as Ryan Temple placed fourth at 130, Eric Kelly finished third at 152 and Wyatt Wickum finished fourth at 189.

    The top four wrestlers from each weight class advance to Friday-Saturday’s Class B-C state tournament in Billings.
