Not only is Dylan Surber a star on the track, he's helping the Beeters on the football field as a kicker and wide receiver

Chinook's Dylan Surber, left, kicks off during last Saturday's Class C playoff game against Victor in Chinook. Surber is the Sugarbeeters' kicker and a wide receiver this season, while he's also one of the top track and field athletes in all of Class C for the Beeters in the spring.

Dylan Surber, a senior student and athlete for the Chinook Sugarbeeters, has found quite a bit of success in several different Beeter uniforms over the years.

He is currently chasing a second state football championship as a wide receiver and kicker with the Beeters, but is also a key contributor on the basketball and track and field teams.

Surber has been a part of all three sports each and every season, and has now played three years of varsity football, is heading into his second year of varsity basketball, and will be a four-year letter winner on the track team before his career is all said and done.

Two years ago, Surber got to be a part of the Beeters football program that won the Class C 8-Man state championship. But he has also seen state success running for the track team. He has placed fourth in the 800-meters at the state level, as well as grabbed a second place finish in the short relay two times, and second and third place finishes with the long relay. But his success also spills into the classroom, as Surber has also achieved All State Academic honors in track the last three years, as well Academic All State honors in football his sophomore year.

Surber could possibly come away with another state title in football this season. But with his final seasons of basketball and track still ahead of him, he still has plenty of time to add to his long list of accomplishments.

Here's five questions as Surber's Beeters get ready to head to Fairview in the Class C playoffs.

HDN: What is the best and worse thing about being the kicker for the Chinook football team this year?

Surber: “I really like kicking, so that is a plus. And we don’t ever stick with a kicker either, so being the only kicker this year has been cool. But I don’t think there is anything bad about kicking though, I tried kicking in the past, but this year everything worked out, and I have been able to have success kicking.”

HDN: What would it mean to you personally to win the Class C 8-Man state championship this season?

Surber: “That would be awesome, especially being a senior. Having a championship and graduating would be really nice. I think it would mean more (than two years ago) because I am actually playing now.”

HDN: What is more exhausting, playing a high-tempo basketball game like the Beeters play, or running the 400-meter, 800-meter, short relay, and the long relay, like you do during the track season?

Surber: “I would say running track actually. The 400 and the 800 are normally pretty close together at a lot of meets that we go to, so that makes it tough. But then another 400-meters and 100-meters makes it even tougher. And in basketball we get subs and what not, but in track, you just have to gut through it.”

HDN: What goals do you have for the upcoming basketball season?

Surber: “Personally I would just like to see myself improve overall, and as a leader. But for team goals, I would like for us to get past divisionals. We always get stuck there it seems like, and I would like to see the team get past that and get to state, that would be nice.”

HDN: Which of the sports that you compete in would you like to continue past high school, if the opportunity presents itself?

Surber: “Definitely track. I just really enjoy running, and if I can do that after high school, that woul just be awesome.”
