The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team wasn’t happy with a 29-23 loss to Northwest College last Thursday night in Havre.

So the Lights took out their frustrations on competitors Sunday afternoon in Spokane. MSU-N captured the team title at the Northwest Intercollegiate Tournament Sunday in Spokane, crowning five individual champions and placing 13 grapplers overall.

“We got to see some tough competition from Boise State’s 2’s and 3’s as well as starters from NIC (North Idaho),  Highline Community College, UGF 2’s and 3’s, and Simon Fraser. There were plenty of other competitors in the unattached groups that gave us great competition.,” MSU-N head coach Tyson Thivierge said. “This tournament was a building block for this season, and hopefully we take this performance and run wild with it.”

MSU-N's three individual titles came at 133 pounds, 141 and 174. The Lights also shared titles at 184 as Kody Reed and Garrett DeMers didn’t wrestle off for that championship.

Max Payne won the 174-pound title by beating teammate Jared Miller 5-2 in the championship match. At 141 pounds, Hunter Azure went undefeated, including an 18-5 win over Boise State’s Manny Ybarra in the title bout. Chris Williams beat Issac Bernard of Simon Fraser, 6-5 to also win an individual title for the Lights. Red-shirt Jorrell Jones also reached a championship match, losing to V.J. Guilio at 197 pounds. Teammate Toby Cheff also lost to Guilio, but wound up finishing third.

Veterans Ethan Hinebauch and Cameron Neiss each lost just once on Sunday, bringing home third-place finishes as well, while Aaron LaFarge (125) and Trevor Goss (149) both grabbed fourth-place finishes. Freshman Eli Hinebauch also finished fifth at 157 pounds for the Lights.

“We had guys that have been struggling this season and they were able to turn it around this weekend and that was fun to witness,” Thivierge said. “Now they just need to continue to grow, get stronger and build from this experience. We need to find a level of consistency whether it is in a dual meet or tournament. This was a good weekend for that. Now it is time for them to feel good about this performance, go home and see family and come back stronger.”

The Lights will have this week off before competing in the annual Battle of the Rockies Nov. 20 and Dec. 1 in Great Falls. The Lights are back at home to host arch rival UGF Dec. 4. For full results from Sunday’s tournament in Spokane, go to www.havredailynews.com.
