  • Celebrating History: Chief Rocky Boy dies, park created

    Updated Apr 29, 2016

The article was rather lengthy, mostly taken from accounts of the Great Falls Tribune. The article noted that Chief Rocky Boy was over 80 years old, and that he had passed away on the “recently acquired Assinniboine reservation.” Other news regarding the former Fort Assinniboine military...

One of Havre’s oldest fraternal organizations elected its officers, and this article was found on the front page of The Hill County Democrat’s April 15, 1916, issue: Elks Elect Officers The local lodge of Elks held their annual installation of officer service in their lodge rooms in this city last evening. The Havre Plaindealer’s April 1, 1916, issue had a good-sized article announcing that the secretary of the interior favored increasing the amount of land for Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. The amount announced in the newspaper stated the legislation, crafted by Sen. Meyer, set aside 30,900 acres for Rocky Boy Reservation, 80 acres for a reservoir site for the city of Havre and 10,240 acres for Beaver Creek Park. However, Secretary Lane wa...

  • Celebrating history: Moral outrage at dancing

    Updated Feb 26, 2016

By Emily Mayer In last week’s column, I mentioned that the Hill County Democrat was quite upset and vocal about the apparent goings-on of dances hosted at Havre High School. The Democrat continued its diatribe in this week’s issue. I thought it would be entertaining to read, so here is the entry in the Feb. 26, 1916 issue: DANCING AT HIGH SCHOOL In a recent issue of this paper we requested the school board of Havre to meet and pass a resolution prohibiting in future all kinds of suggestive dancing and drinking whiskey in...

  • Celebrating history: The travails of Havre in 1916

    Updated Feb 19, 2016

Then, the area got a Chinook wind; those warm winds that can bring unseasonably warm temperatures, melt snow and create havoc. In 1916, Havre was still a relatively new town. It had been incorporated in 1893, only a few years after its settlement due in no small part to Jim Hill’s St. Paul-Minneapolis-Manitoba railroad, the precursor to the Great Northern. Floods...
