By Francine Brady Havre-Hill County Library I never imagined that I would enjoy a book written about the history of the Hawthorn tree. I have looked at books that identify trees, but those were not as fascinating as “Hawthorn: the tree that has nourished, healed and inspired through the ages” by Bill Vaughn. Living in Montana, Vaughn has Hawthorns growing on his property. Trying to trim back his first Hawthorn became quite a daunting task even while using a chainsaw. Thus began his search into his family roots and the...
By Francine Brady Havre-Hill County Library Christine Carbo, a new Montana author residing in Whitefish, has written a wonderful suspense novel “The Wild Inside.” Carbo’s story takes place in the east and west Glacier areas of Glacier Park. She gives such a detailed description of the park and surroundings that readers feel as if they were there. Think of walking in the woods alone. The sun is shining. Birds are flying about and the bees have a muted buzz. All goes well, and it is a wonderful day until that wary...

What are your big Saturday night plans? Saturday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. the Havre-Hill County Library is hosting a fun Coloring and Cupcakes event. Coloring, it’s not just for kids. Have you heard of the newest trend? Adult coloring books are becoming super popular these days and it’s no surprise. Not only does coloring take us back to a simpler time in life when all we had to worry about was whether or not we wanted the crusts cut off our PB&J’s, but researchers have been examining the effects of coloring for years and...
Do you know about the Havre Hill County Library Foundation? The foundation is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, managed by a group of community volunteers who handle the donations made to the Havre-Hill County Library and decide what donated money will be spent on. A lot of the donations come in the form of memorials; when beloved family members and friends die, people donate money to the Foundation in their memory. We offer the option to honor friends and family while they are still alive as well, in the form of...

By Francine Brady “Big Cherry Holler” by Adriana Trigiani is book two in the “Big Stone Gap Series.” Everything that really matters is here: humor, romance, wisdom, drama and the engaging oddball characters from “Big Stone Gap.” “Big Cherry Holler” is more serious and concentrates on letting go of the past, of old hurts and making room for wonderful things to happen. Jumping forward eight years into Ave Maria Mulligan’s life, we find she is now married to Jack MacChesney the love of her life. They have a...

By Francine Brady A book that has no raunchy sex or foul language and is enjoyable and was a best seller, “Big Stone Gap” by Adriana Trigiani is a charming novel that takes the reader into the danger and oppressiveness of the coal mines in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia and presents a likeable sympathetic heroine. Brimming with humor and wise notions of a small town life, Big Stone Gap is home to Ave Maria Mulligan, a 35-year-old spinster pharmacist who lives a comfortable life surrounded by good friends. She is...
By Kristen Kindle Today is May Day. A holiday that has been around since before the Christian era as the first day of summer. Growing up I celebrated this day by driving the neighbor’s houses and sneaking a basket of candy to their front door and ringing the doorbell, if we were caught we got kissed. Many European countries celebrate the holiday but each have their own variations, and we included some library variations too. Great Britain holds dances and a crowning of the May Queen, it is also when many villages celebrate...
