  • Saturday's Football Scoreboard: Lights fall to Yotes; Box Elder rolls again

    Updated Oct 11, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern Lights couldn't hold off the College of Idaho Yotes Saturday in a Frontier Conference football game at Blue Pony Stadium. The Lights fell to the Yotes 48-17. Northern amassed over 300 yards of offense, but the Yotes rushed for nearly 300, along with four touchdowns from A.J. Martin. MSU-N (0-5, 0-6) is on the road next Saturday to play Montana Tech. For complete coverage, see Monday's Havre Daily News. Saturday's Scores The Associated...

    Updated Oct 10, 2015

The Havre Blue Ponies took a giant step towards winning the Central A championship Friday night with a 40-27 win in Belgrade. Dane Warp threw three touchdown passes and the Ponies dominated the second half after a 20-20 tie at intermission. If HHS beats Lewistown next Friday night, the Ponies will win the conference title outright, and have a bye in the first round of the Class A playoffs. For full coverage, see Monday's HDN. • Northern Game Day: Cover Man

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 9, 2015

Football has been a journey for Montana State University-Northern's Malcolm Manuel and it's one that he won't soon forget. Manuel came to Northern two years ago from Golden West College and since his arrival he has been an important part of Lights football, and not just on the field, but off it as well. "Malcolm is just a great person," Lights defensive coordinator Jake Eldrigde said. "He just does everything the right way and not just on the X's and O's, but off the field,...

  • Blue Pony netters visit Browning on Saturday

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 9, 2015

From the very first game this season, new Havre High head volleyball coach Tamecia Jarvis has pushed the Blue Ponies to be better. And so far, it's worked. Havre has already won more games overall and more games in the Central A Conference than it did all of last season, and as the Ponies get ready to take on Browning Saturday on the road, they will be looking to improve their record to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play. "We just need to keep trying to improve," Jarvis sa...

  • Cats, Griz back at home

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 9, 2015

For the Montana State Bobcats and Montana Grizzlies, the objective this weekend remains the same — both teams want to play better than they did last week. But there’s a difference. One team is on a two-game winning streak, while the other needs to bounce back from a stinging road loss. The No. 19 Bobcats (1-1, 2-2) suffered a 49-41 loss at Northern Arizona last Saturday night, but the score wasn’t indicative of how the game went, as NAU rolled to a 42-14 lead by the end of th...

  • Title Hopes: Ponies clash with Panthers

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 9, 2015

If there is one game that has been marked on the calendar of the Havre High football team all season long, it's Belgrade. And finally, tonight, the Blue Ponies and Panthers will battle it out for Central A conference supremacy. If there is one team that's had the number of the Ponies in recent years it's been Belgrade (1-4. 1-0). Last season, the Panthers knocked off Havre (4-2, 2-0) 42-27 at Blue Pony Stadium, marking their third straight win in the series. The victory also...

  • Frontier Notebook: Frontier is still up for grabs

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 8, 2015

After a week off, the Frontier Conference football season will resume in earnest this weekend. And there’s a lot of questions still to be answered. In fact, it’s almost like the season hasn’t started yet, because no one has really taken control of the Frontier title chase as of yet. For a brief moment, it looked like Carroll College had seized command when the Fighting Saints beat Southern Oregon to open the season last month in Helena. But Montana Tech erased that control whe...

  • Nationals play two against Bulls

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 8, 2015

Through five games, the Glacier Nationals of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League have yet to find the winner's circle. Yet, that is something they hope to change this weekend against the Billings Bulls. The Nationals, who lost in their last outing to Great Falls by the score of 5-1 last Friday in Havre, will travel to Sidney this weekend for back-to-back games against the Bulls Friday and Saturday night. The Bulls, who are normally one of the powers in the Frontier...

  • That's One: Skylights win opener

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 8, 2015

Just about everything was new for the Montana State University-Skylights in their season-opening basketball game Wednesday night at the Armory Gymnasium. New players, new team, new rules and even a new opponent. But, after four quarters, instead of two halves (one of the new rules in women’s college basketball this season), the final result was anything but new. The Skylights opened their season, and the 2015 Duck Inn Classic with a 72-31 win over Concordia-Alberta W...

  • Pony harriers in action today at Helena Invite

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 8, 2015

It seems like just yesterday that the Havre High cross country teams were running their first race, but, already, the Central A divisional meet is little more than a week away. Before both Blue Pony teams travel to Browning for divisionals next Saturday, though, they will head to Helena today where they will compete in the annual preview meet at Bill Roberts Golf Course. One thing that is different about the preview meet is that unlike in years past, Helena will not be...

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 8, 2015

The Frontier Conference basketball season is still two months away. But the league has released its preseason picks, as well as it's preseason individual lists. On Wednesday night, the Frontier announced its men's and women's Preseason Coaches Polls, as well as its Preseason All-Conference Teams. The Montana State University-Northern Skylights were picked to win the Frontier title as the Skylights received five of the seven first-place votes. The MSU-Northern men were picked...

  • George Ferguson Column: I guess it's not crazy to love running

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 7, 2015

When it comes to sports and physical fitness, I might be a walking contradiction. With a heavy emphasis on the walking part. On one hand, I play and coach tennis, and there are few sports that are as physically demanding as tennis is. On the other, I also play golf, a game that could be physically demanding, but thanks to a little-known Californian who invented the motorized golf cart back in 1951, golf isn’t physically challenging to me. But back on the other hand, I have a...

  • 2015-16 Northern Basketball Preview: Talented Lights ready for a new season

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 7, 2015

In college basketball, change is inevitable, and last season, the Montana State University-Northern Lights went through plenty of change. It didn’t matter much, though, as the Lights still had plenty of success on the court. Still, change continues to come to the Lights, who finished 19-13 a year ago, and tied for third in the Frontier Conference with a 7-7 record. And once again, the Lights’ roster suffered some key losses, and will go through some change as they embark on...

  • Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Natalee Faupel, MSU-N Women's Basketball

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 7, 2015

Time flies when you’re having fun. And the same can be said for the life of a college basketball player. And it’s certainly flown by for Montana State University-Northern guard Natalee Faupel, who already begins her junior season tonight when the Skylights host the Concordia-Alberta Thunder on opening night of the 2015 Duck Inn Classic. In all, the Skylights will play three games in the Armory Gymnasium to open the season, including tonight’s game which tips off at 7. Northern...

  • 2015-16 Northern Basketball Preview: New Skylights want the same success

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 7, 2015

Less than seven months ago, the Montana State University-Northern women’s basketball team was playing in the Elite 8 of the NAIA national tournament. That day was the culmination of a spectacular run by the Skylights. Fast forward to tonight, and the Skylights are ready to take the floor once again — albeit with a very different MSU-N squad than the one that won 29 games, reached the Frontier Conference championship game and racked up two wins at the national tournament las...

  • All sides clicking during Ponies' win streak

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 6, 2015

Following a 54-28 loss to Miles City three weeks ago, the outlook appeared bleak for the Havre High football team. The defense was struggling, the offense couldn’t run the ball and nothing seemed to be clicking. However, fast forward three weeks and the Blue Ponies have not only righted the ship, they have reminded themselves and their fans why pundits thought so highly of them in the preseason. During Havre’s 1-2 start, the Ponies allowed an average of 37 points per gam...

  • Hi-Line Football Roundup: Harlem wins first game of the season

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 6, 2015

Coming into last weekend's game, the Chinook football team had yet to be tested. Many thought a solid Belt team could be the first to give the Sugarbeeters a run for their money, but in the end, Belt was no match. Thanks to another dominating defensive performance and an overpowering ground game, the Beeters cruised to a 44-0 win over the Huskies last Friday at Hoon Field to improve to 5-0 on the season. Ian McIntosh ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more in the win...

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: Box Elder, Chinook earn 6C East victories

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 6, 2015

Every match is important in October when it comes to high school volleyball on the Hi-Line. It just so happens, some matches are more important than others. And while there were some exciting mid-season tournaments this past weekend, no matches were more important than the few District 6C East clashes that took place on the Hi-Line this past week. Last Thursday saw the biggest of them all as the Chinook Sugarbeeters played host to the North Star Knights, in what is a hotly con...

  • MSU-N spikers honored

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 6, 2015

A pair of Montana State University-Northern volleyball players have been honored by the Frontier Conference this week. MSU-N sophomore hitter Cassie Krueger was named Frontier Volleyball Attacker of the Week for her outstanding match against UM-Western last Friday night. Northern won their first conference match with a 3-2 road win over Montana-Western. Krueger averaged 5.6 kills with a .242 attack percentage. She also averaged 3.80 digs per set. She tallied 28 kills, which...

  • HHS spikes Browning

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 5, 2015

Every coach is worried about how their team will play on homecoming weekend and whether or not the festivities will turn into a distraction. But, for the Havre High volleyball team, there were no ill effects as the Blue Ponies took care of business. Havre welcomed Browning into the HHS gymnasium Saturday night for a Central A conference battle and despite a sloppy second game, the Ponies cruised to a 3-1 victory by the scores of 25-8, 19-25, 25-15 and 25-4. With the win, HHS...

  • Blue Ponies swamp the Rangers

    Chris Peterson|Updated Oct 5, 2015

Leading up to the Havre High football team's homecoming game against Livingston, head coach Mark Samson talked about how good teams show up to play regardless of opponent. Well Friday night, the Blue Ponies showed signs of being a good team as they not only dominated a weaker opponent in Livingston, they also overcame the elements at a rain-soaked Blue Pony Stadium on their way to a 40-0 win. The win over the Rangers was the third straight for Havre and improved the Ponies...

  • A soggy home run for Ponies

    George Ferguson|Updated Oct 5, 2015

The Havre High cross country teams get one day each season to run on their home course, in front of their hometown fans. And while mother nature made that one day a difficult one, the Blue Ponies made the most out of it. Saturday, Havre hosted the annual 2015 Havre Invitational on what was a cold, windy, and rain-soaked course on the campus of Montana State University-Northern. And though good times were hard to come by, new HHS head coach Josh Holt was very proud of all of...
