  • From the Fringe - Excited to see Class A hoops together

    George Ferguson|Updated Apr 19, 2017

Class A basketball is joining the party. Or, more aptly put, it’s becoming one big party. Last week, at a spring meeting of the Montana High School Association in Helena, Class A representatives voted to begin combining the Class A boys and girls state basketball tournaments, with the first combined tournament slated for March of 2019 in Great Falls. To a sports writer such as myself, that was exciting news. It’s exciting because Havre High has a pretty strong tendency tow...

  • From the Fringe: A jam-packed what we saw, what we'll see

    George Ferguson, Sports Editor|Updated Oct 21, 2014

What we saw? This past weekend in Havre, we saw almost too much to wrap our heads around. But, on one of those ultra-special weekends in our area, we sure tried to take it all in. I would be remised to not start out by mentioning how great the football was all week long on the Hi-Line. It started with Chinook storming back to beat Power-Dutton-Brady late Wednesday night at Hoon Field. And that's after the game was postponed for nearly an hour because of a vicious thunderstorm,...

  • What we saw, what we'll see

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 24, 2013

What a weekend of sports in Havre, and beyond. I guess that’s what you get when you mix the fall sports season, homecoming at Montana State University-Northern and Festival Days together. And while it will be hard for any weekend coming up to live up to the excitement of this past one, don’t worry, because there’s plenty of great sporting events to come this weekend too. But before we jump ahead to what we’ll likely see this weekend, let’s look back at the weekend that was. He... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: Frontier Conference, meet Zach McKinley

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 23, 2013

I’ve been covering the Montana State University-Northern football team since Lights’ standout Donny Saisbury was running and catching passes out of the Lights’ backfield. Not to make Donny feel old or anything, but that was already nine seasons ago. And starting with Saisbury, it’s incredible to me just how many good running backs the Lights have had in my short, or long time at the HDN, depending on how you look at it. When Saisbury’s career came to an end, there were ques... Full story

  • George Ferguson Column: Lights should revel in Saturday's complete game

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 16, 2013

I know all the football cliches: It’s only one win. It’s a long season. Just have to play ’em one game at a time. Yes, when you love football as much as I do, and you’ve covered coaches for as long as I have, you’ve certainly heard them all. But on Saturday afternoon, on a sun-drenched and breezy day at Blue Pony Stadium, it was time to throw cliches’ out the window. It was time to call just call the Montana State University-Northern Lights’ 45-27 win over the Eastern Orego... Full story

  • What we saw, and what we'll see

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 10, 2013

The fall sports season is now in full swing. But locally, it really kicks into high gear this coming weekend. First though, it’s time to take a quick look back at the first major weekend of the fall sports season, and view some things that might not have made it into Monday’s Weekend Sports Roundup. The big talk of course was Friday night’s Havre High football game against the Miles City Cowboys. Once upon a time, there was a game between Miles City and Havre which will forev... Full story

  • Saturday had a different feel in Helena

    George Ferguson|Updated Sep 9, 2013
    1

HELENA — Over the years, the Carroll College Fighting Saints have been a tough nut to crack. Not just for the Montana State University-Northern Lights, but for every team in the Frontier Conference. And following Saturday’s 31-3 loss to the Saints at Nelson Stadium in Helena, the Lights haven’t cracked Carroll’s halo in 16 straight games. And an even bigger streak continued as Northern still hasn’t beaten Carroll in Helena since the school reintroduced football almost 15... Full story

  • MSU-N defense carries the torch

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 30, 2013

The Montana State University-Northern offense was all the rage leading up to Thursday night’s season-opening game at Dickinson State, while the MSU-N defense didn’t get the hype. But in Thursday night’s 14-0 win over the Dickinson State Blue Hawks at the Henry Biesiot Activities Center in Dickinson, N.D., it was the Lights’ defense which came up big and lit the way to a victory. The Northern offense, which finished second to record-setting Southern Oregon in most Frontie... Full story

  • Predicting the Frontier Conference is fun, and we all have our own methods

    Updated Aug 26, 2013
    1

Prognosicating is fun. Football fans especially love to do it, and that’s what the month of August is all about. When July ends, it’s always time to start looking ahead to the next college football season. And that’s what I’ve been doing as it pertains to the Frontier Conference for over a month now. But the looking ahead is almost over. The wait is almost over. The Montana State University-Northern Lights kick off the 2013 season Thursday night in Dickinson, N.D., so it’s almost game time. And for the second straight Frontie... Full story

  • Golf season is short, but memories are plenty

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 22, 2013

The summer is a double-edged sword for me in so many ways. Just like when I was a kid, and never wanted the new school year to start, summers still fly by way too fast for me. On one hand, it’s good because I love my job, and I love filling the fall and winter sports pages full of local sports. I love writing about what local high school and college kids do in sports each and every weekend, and let’s face it, outside of baseball and some recreational sports there just isn... Full story

  • Golf league champions will be crowned

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 20, 2013

Playoff golf is underway in Havre, and soon, league champions will be crowned at courses like Prairie Farms, Beaver Creek and the Chinook Golf Club. But before the men’s league playoffs continue tonight at Prairie Farms, the high school golfers will take to the course today for the 18-hole Havre High Golf Tournament. The tournament will feature 25 Havre High boys and girls, as well as varsity and junior varsity golfers from Browning and Lewistown. Today’s tourney is one of... Full story

  • Column: Time to move on in Missoula, but for me, there's a lot of damage that's been done

    George Ferguson|Updated Aug 1, 2013

Over the past 18 months, and to some extent, even longer, the University of Montana football program, and by extension, the school itself, has gone through some tumultuous times. Investigations by the NCAA, the Department of Justice and the Department of Education will do that to a school. Along the way, there have been many announcements, many landmark days, and not too many of them have been positive. While many Griz fans, and the program itself might have seen last... Full story

  • Havre is a rodeo town, and this is rodeo time

    George Ferguson|Updated Jul 18, 2013

Havre, Chinook, Big Sandy, the entire Hi-Line for that matter, it’s all rodeo country. There’s no denying that. And this week marks the biggest rodeo week of the year. It’s Great Northern Fair time in Havre, and that means many things to many people. But one thing that will certainly stand out over the next three days, is the rodeo action inside the Great Northern Fairgrounds arena. It’s interesting that, for all of the excellent cowboys and cowgirls, all of the passion... Full story

  • Twenty years ago, seems like just yesterday

    George Ferguson|Updated Jul 12, 2013

Remember when you were a kid, or if you’re a youngster now, and you counted down to Christmas or to your birthday? And because you wanted that day to come so badly, it seemed like the countdown went on forever. Well, I actually still count down to Christmas because it’s my favorite holiday, but as an adult, time sure doesn’t seem to stand still like it used to. In fact, the years seem to go by faster and faster. This weekend marks the 20-year reunion for the Havre High Class... Full story

  • Walt Currie did so much more than coach

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 28, 2013

When it comes to coaches, it’s pretty unique to have the perspective I do. Not only do I get to cover coaches for a living, but I am one myself. And that gives me the opportunity to see both sides of the fence, so to speak. As is the case with any coach, I have many mentors, many coaches who have influenced my life, my coaching philosophy, and in general, the way I approach sports all together. I also know that coaches have a unique ability to touch the lives of many, no m... Full story

  • Local Golf Report: Breast Cancer tourney up next

    Daniel Horton|Updated Jun 25, 2013

The local golf season sure is heating up. Hot temperatures in the Havre area certainly are making for good golf conditions, though frequent thunderstorms are also getting in the way at times too. Still, the tournament season is now well under way at local golf courses, and especially at Prairie Farms Golf Course. This past Saturday, the MSU-Northern NLASF Scramble was held at Prairie Farms, and as usual, a good time was had by all. The annual tournament helps raise money for the Northern Lights Athletic Scholarship Foundation... Full story

  • Havre, sports community loses the great Walt Currie

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 19, 2013
    1

Havre, Havre High School, Great Falls High, Montana State University-Northern…Those are just a few of the places and institutions that coaching legend Walt Currie influenced over a brilliant career. Currie passed away from a blood ailment at the age of 69 Sunday in Great Falls. To Havre residents, Currie was a longtime Blue Pony head football and wrestling coach. He achieved great success in both sports. He also coached the wrestling program at Great Falls High, and touched m... Full story

  • It's tourney time at local courses

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 11, 2013

The rain has gone away. But flooding continues to be the story on the Hi-Line, and in many parts of Montana. Flooding is still a main concern at Beaver Creek Golf Course as well. As of Monday afternoon, the waters have receded some at BCGC, but much of the course is still saturated, and areas hit hardest, which are No. 8, No. 2, No. 9 and No. 1 continue to have flood waters on the ground. Meanwhile, golf resumed at Prairie Farms this past week, with men’s league action last T... Full story

  • Sports of all kinds roll through summer

    Daniel Horton|Updated Jun 7, 2013

As the summer weather settles in across the Hi-Line, there are plenty of opportunities for young athletes to take advantage of this off-season. And it doesn’t matter if you are an up-and-coming tennis player, or a seasoned varsity basketball player, a number of camps set to take place in Havre in the upcoming weeks have a lot to offer. Spending the summer on the couch isn’t going to make anybody better, so when you are not taking the time to work out, or run on your own, it... Full story

  • George Ferguson column: Blue Hawks are already headed out the door

    George Ferguson|Updated Jun 6, 2013

A year ago, Frontier Conference expansion really took shape. Dickinson State University was a full-fledged member of the league, Southern Oregon began playing football in the Frontier and the conference announced the College of Idaho would do the same beginning in 2014. I, for one, really liked the additions, whether the schools were football-only members, or whether it was the Blue Hawks playing all sports. In fact, I thought DSU was a perfect fit for the Frontier and have... Full story

  • Central A got it right by settling it on the diamond

    Daniel Horton|Updated May 20, 2013

Heading into the weekend, I think the verdict was still out on the decision to begin having a Central A divisional softball tournament. I had heard arguments for and against the idea. But after sitting through a lot of great Class A softball on Friday and Saturday in Havre, I don’t think the tournament could have played out any better. Yes, watching the Havre High Blue Ponies take one of the top three spots, and punch their ticket to state after a 3-5 regular season conference record, would have been the icing on the cake, bu...
