Two years of work at new landfill

Editor:

Over the past six years, the nine-member Landfill Board has had to make some tough decisions on what should be done with the 92 tons of garbage we all generate per day. This is not an easy job, but it is a necessary evil. None of us really like the concept of land-filling garbage, but unless we push ourselves to reduce waste and recycle more, we must have a place to put it.

In October 2009, approval was given to develop a new landfill that over the long term should keep the public cost lower. During the past 24 months, the dollars spent to develop this project were mostly kept on the Hi-Line and they supported many local jobs. Local companies that worked, or supported workers on this two-year project include:

Patrick Construction, Baltrusch Construction, Clausen and Sons, Stormwater Construction, LT Trucking, Holt Plumbing, Schine Electric, NW Security, Floren's Hill County Printing, Hi-Line Drilling, Bear Paw Technologies, Hill County Road Department, Pacific Steel & Recycling, Wildhorse Seeds, Ezzie's Wholesale, Hill County Electric and NorthWestern Energy.

There were also a few out-of-area companies who moved dirt and built fences, but even employment of these companies supported local food establishments, motels and many other retail stores and suppliers.

The Landfill Board plans to have the new landfill open before long. All equipment must be moved from the old location to the new location in a short period of time because the garbage just keeps coming.

It is important for everyone to remember that all vehicles coming to the landfill have their waste loads covered with a tarp, or secured so that litter is not falling out on the way to the landfill. A sign located at the front entrance will have a list of all landfill rules which include existing rules, as well as some new ones.

To access the new site please drive approximately three miles east of Havre on Highway 2, turn south on the newly paved road which is 80th Avenue SE and go about two miles When the facility is open, there will be several containers for the public to dump into, and the board would appreciate it if all your garbage would be placed in the containers. We all need to do our part in keeping this new facility nice and clean. Please do not place your garbage on the ramp or in the unloading area, all garbage needs to be placed directly into the containers.

Any questions concerning this landfill or normal operations, please feel free to call the Health and Planning Office located in the Hill County Courthouse.
