HDN Athlete Profile: Kacie Johnson

Senior swimmer Kacie Johnson has been a big part of the Havre High girls swim team success.

Johnson has been a varsity letter winner all four years, and has participated in the all-class swim meat for three years, as well as now preparing to compete in her fourth. While at state, Johnson has been a part of a state championship team her freshman and sophomore year, and helped her team take second place at state a year ago.

And with another state meet just around the corner, Johnson is hoping she and the rest of the Ponies can reclaim the state title.

Here's five questions with one of HHS's most experienced swimmers

HDN: What races do you compete in throughout the season, and which one is your favorite?

Johnson: "Every year at state I have kind of swam a different race. This year it will be the 100 free and the 50 free. And I definitely like the 100 free better. It is the best race because the whole thing is a sprint and it's not too short. The 50 is too short for me because once I get going it's done. I also swim the 100 Backstroke (during the season) and have swam the 200 IM and the 100 Fly, but not very often."

HDN: What is it like being a part of a state championship swim team?

Johnson: "It is so much fun. I don't know how to describe it, but the state team is so much different than the rest of the team. It's smaller and you get so close with each other and you get to know everybody better."

HDN: What are our goals for this season?

Johnson: "I want to beat the Havre record in the 100 Free (currently held by Marion Warner, set in 1983 with a time of 56.75 seconds) and hopefully win state as a team. I also want to place in the 100 Free at state in at least the top eight."

HDN: If you weren't a swimmer, which other sport would you like to be a part of?

Johnson: "I am thinking about playing tennis this year, but I am not sure. I would probably play basketball; I haven't ever played before except for in gym. It is really fun in gym."

HDN: What do you like most about swimming?

Johnson: "It is kind of a natural ability for me, it just comes easy. It's also a good workout. It keeps you tired, and with running you're tired for a minute, but with swimming, it keeps you tired all night and I just like the workout."
