It was an exciting week

of boys basketball on the Hi-Line as teams closed out the 2011 portion of their schedule and headed for the Holiday Break.

The action started last Monday with the Big Sandy Pioneers thumping District 9C rival Turner in Big Sandy, 69-39. A 25-9 first-quarter run was all the Pioneers needed to pull away from the Tornadoes.

Trevor Lackner scored 23 points and Justin Stevens added 13 for Big Sandy. Kaden Beck also chipped in with 10 points and Zack Leader had nine. Turner was paced by Lucas Reed's 16 points.

It was also a good Monday night for the Chester/J-I Hawks, who won a District 10C game at home over Valier, 56-41. The Hawks broke open a close game in the second stanza by going on a 17-8 run to lead 28-17 at halftime.

Lane Harmon led four Hawks in double figures with 18 points. Dell Harmon scored 12, Jeff Wanken added 11 and Jordan Oraw chipped in with 10 for C/J-I.

Tuesday night saw the Box Elder Bears jump into the win column with a 52-46 win over North Star in Box Elder. The Bears led 22-19 at half and had to hold off the Knights in the fourth quarter.

The North Star loss overshadowed a huge night from senior Jordy Donoven, who poured in a career-high 31 points. Donoven hit six 3-pointers. Box Elder was balanced on offense, and got 12 points by Skylar Parisian, as well as 10 each from Dakota Standing Rock and Randall Gardipee.

Tuesday night also saw the Chinook Sugarbeeters earn a big 9C win over Hays-Lodge Pole in Chinook. The Beeters beat the Thunderbirds 60-51 and got 17 points from Scott Schmitt. Grant Tilleman added 15 points for the Beeters, while the T-Birds were led by Trenton Kirkaldie's 12 points. Colt Walker chipped in with 10 for HLP. The Box Elder boys also beat Denton 65-55 Thursday night.

Things didn't go as well for Big Sandy, Turner or Harlem Tuesday night.

The Pioneers were beaten at home, 63-50 by Roy-Winifred. Justin Stevens scored 18 points, Trevor Lackner scored 11 and Jessey Bailey added 10 points in the losing effort.

Hinsdale also handed Turner its second loss in two days Tuesday. The Tornadoes fell at home 54-33. Dylan Welsh scored 10 points and Lucas Reed chipped in with nine for the Tornadoes.

Meanwhile, Malta blasted rival Harlem 91-56 in a District 2B showdown in Malta. The Mustangs raced out to a 27-10 lead in the first quarter on their way to scoring 54 first-half points. Bud Buck tried to keep Harlem in the game with a team-high 19 points.

Back in the 9C on Thursday night, HLP took care of the North Star Knights 53-43 in Rudyard. The Knights trailed 22-17 at intermission, and a 19-11 run by the T-Birds put North Star way for good in the fourth quarter.

Floyd Macanell scored 11 for the T-Birds, while Trenton Kirkaldie added 10 as did Marvin Cole. Jordy Donoven remained hit for North Star with a game-high 20 points. Shelby Sizemore added nine points for the Knights.

Rocky Boy closed out 2011 with a huge 65-63 District 1B win Thursday night in Shelby. After leading early on, the Stars found themselves down 41-38 in the fourth quarter. But a 7-0 run late lifted Rocky Boy to the win over the rival Coyotes.

The Stars saw 11 different players score, while Dusty Standing Rock led with 13 points. Desmond Parker added 11 points and Ricky Stump scored 10.
