Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Big Sandy's Justin Stevens (right) looks for a shot over a Rocky Boy defender during a boys high school basketball game last Thursday night in Big Sandy.

Basketball was on somewhat on a hiatus over the holiday break, but it was back in full swing this week and weekend on the Hi-Line.

Thursday fans saw three local games hit the Hi-Line.

The 9C Big Sandy Pioneers took on long time rival, Class B Rocky Boy Stars in Big Sandy on Thursday and narrowly escaped with the home win, 77-75. The Pioneers took the lead and held the advantage nearly the entire game. But when the Stars outscored the Pioneers 20-13 in the fourth quarter, the Pioneers almost saw their lead disappear. Clutch free throws down the stretch and an early lead proved to be the determining factor for the Pioneers.

Big Sandy was led by post players Justin Stevens with 23 points and Kaden Beck with 20. Jessey Bailey also added 17 and Trevor Lackner added nine. Zach Leader had eight-points as well.

For Rocky Boy, Buddy Gopher and J.R. Day Child led with 18-points each. Dusty Standing Rock also added 16 and Desmond Parker added 12.

The 9C Box Elder Bears also found themselves locked up in a tight match on Thursday. And the Bears were fortunate enough to grab a 74-72 overtime win over Heart Butte.

The Bears jumped out in front with a big first half, but got into some trouble when Heart Butte posted 40 in the second half. Box Elder outscored Heart Butte 6-4 in overtime for the win. Jesse Ramos led with 16 points and Skyler Parisian followed with 15 for the Bears.

The 9C Chinook Sugarbeeters steamrolled the 9C Turner Tornadoes on Thursday.

Chinook grabbed the conference win 60-24, with Brandon Riphenburg leading the Beeters with 12 points and Lane Seymour scoring 10. Dusty Mohar socred 16 for the Tornadoes.

But the Beeters didn't have an easy contest on Friday, when they faced off with the Pioneers in another conference game. This time around, the Pioneers took down the Beeters 68-62, proving that right now, the Pioneers are the team to beat in the 9C.

Big Sandy's 42-25 first half lead helped ensure the win as the Beeters went on a run in the second half. The Beeters outscored the Pioneers 37-26 in the final two frames, but came up short.

Lacnker led the Pioneers with 22 points, while Stevens pitched in 18 and Beck added 12. For the Beeters, they were led by Riphenburg and Scott Schmitt who both scored 15 points each. Barry Murnion also scored 14 points for Chinook.

The 10 C Chester/J-I Hawks also suffered a loss on Friday, as they were caught in a 37-34 defensive battle that went into overtime with Power.

A 10-2 fourth quarter gave the Hawks a chance for an overtime win. But with the game locked up at 33-33, the Hawks were outscored 4-1 in overtime. Lane Harman was the only Hawk to score in double digits, finishing with 11 points.

Also earning a win on Friday was the 9C North Star Knights, as they outscored the Sunburst Refiners 60-57.

Both squads scored 12 first quarter points and 17 second quarter points. But it was the 17-4 third quarter that proved to be the difference for the Knights. Sunburns posted 24 more in the fourth, but the Knights were able to escape with the win.

Jordy Donovan racked up 27 points for the Knights and Shelby Sizemore added 14.

In Friday's finale, the Class B Harlem Wildcats defeated Shelby 54-49.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-8 lead put together three more consistant quarters, scoring 13 in the second, nine in the third and 15 in the fourth to ensure the win. Stanley Irvine led the Wildcats with 19 points and Skyler Speakthunder added 16. Wallace Birdtail also added 11 of his own.

But unfortunately, Harlem also fell in tight loss on Saturday, as Glasgow defeated the Wildcats 61-59.

The Wildcats fell behind early and couldn't manage the win. A 21-point third quarter and a 17-point fourth quarter kept the Wildcats in contention, but their efforts fell just short of the win.

Harlem was led by Speakthunder with 28 points and Brandon Hammond with 11. Bud Buck also added 10 points.

Saturday's matchups weren't kind to the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds, Tornadoes or Stars either.

Roy-Winifred defeated the Thunderbirds 69-52, leaving the Thunderbirds in the dust as they fell behind 17-6 in the first quarter. Trent Kirkaldie pitched in 14 points for the Thunderbirds, but was the only double digit scorer for Harlem.

Roy-Winifred also defeated the Tornadoes on Saturday, this time the Tornadoes suffering the 50-14 loss. Alton Mathews led Turner with just five points.

The Stars put up a good fight, but after putting up just 16 first half points, the slow start resulted in a 59-46 loss to Fairfield on Saturday.

The Stars have gotten off to slow starts in a few games this season, and a decent second half has left them short in tight losses. This time the Stars posted 30 in the second half as they held Farifield to 19 in the second half. Rocky Boy was led by Desmond Parker with 11 points and Dusty Standing Rock with nine.

The Bears ended the weekend with a win, defeating the Thunderbirds 73-62 in a Hi-Line shootout.

The Bears' 36 first half points gave Box Elder the Early lead, but the Thunderbirds 32 second half points kept the game respectable, as they fought from behind all night long.

Hays-Lodge Pole was led by Kirkaldie with 27 points and Colt Walter with 13. And the Bears were led by Randall Gardipee with 21 points and Ramos with 18.
