Rain wreaking sports havoc

Just as the high school spring sports season came to a close, the weather has taken a drastic turn for the worse. School is out, it’s baseball season, golf season, it’s camping and fishing time, yet the weather along the Hi-Line is getting in the way, in a big way.

Heavy rains and thunderstorms brought sports to a near standstill this past week and for much of the weekend.

The Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club did get in its Sunday doubleheader with the Medicine Hat Knights, but the North Stars’ home game with the Great Falls Volts Friday night was cancelled. Havre is set to visit Conrad today for a Northern District doubleheader with the Tri-County Cardinals, but those games will most likely be postponed due to another day of torrential rain and thunderstorms.

Overall, baseball in the Havre area has taken a major hit as of late. The city Babe Ruth league hasn’t been able to play games for the last four scheduled nights at Legion Field, while other youth baseball and softball leagues have also missed plenty of action. Some local youth games were played on Saturday, but much of the week has seen cancelled or postponed games around Havre’s baseball and softball fields.

Golf has also taken a back seat to the rain this past week. As with Beaver Creek Park south of Havre, Beaver Creek Golf Course suffered major flooding starting Friday night. Much of the course is under water, and it will be some time before the waters recede enough to allow golf to continue (See more in Tuesday’s Local Golf Report). Golf league action at Prairie Farms Golf Course was also cancelled Wednesday night, as well as Ladies League Thursday night. No flooding has been reported at Prairie Farms or the Chinook Golf Club as of Sunday night.

So with much of the local fields and golf courses saturated with plenty of moisture, the forecast for this week is sunny and warmer after Tuesday. That will be welcome news for many local youth athletes as baseball and summer camps swing into action.

This week is set to see the MSU-Northern Football Camp take place as well as the Havre North Stars Jamboree Thursday-Sunday at Legion Field.
