Calypso wins thrilling Major League title

There have been a lot of surprising wins and losses in Havre Youth Baseball this spring and summer, and when it took two games to crown the Major League champion Sunday, the trend continued for the young players of Havre.

Sunday at Lions Field in Havre marked the end of the Major League baseball tournament. The tournament began Thursday, bringing in Bing ‘N’ Bob’s, Lions, Master Sports, Sears and Calypso, all with the hopes of becoming the 2013 champions. Calypso was an early favorite, holding a first-round bye, but took the long road, as they defeated Bing ‘N’ Bob’s twice Sunday to become champs.

In the first game on Sunday, Calypso won 4-3, handing Bing N Bobs its first loss of the tourney, and forcing a challenge game. In game two, Calypso ran away with the contest, claiming the No. 1 spot with a 15-5, five-inning victory.

Thursday’s results included a 10-9 win for Bing ‘N’ Bob’s over Lions, as well as a 9-8 win for Master Sports over Sears. On Friday, Sears beat Lions 12-6 in loser out action, while Master Sports took down Calypso 11-7 in second round action. And on Saturday, Bing ‘N’ Bob’s defeated Master Sports 15-5 in the semis, while Calypso defeated Sears 13-9 in loser-out, followed by a 9-0 win over Master Sports to get into Sunday’s chipper.

But a very smart base-running Calypso team was able to run away with the title.

In the “if necessary” game, Calypso was able to take advantage of several Bing ‘N’ Bob’s walks, errors, and wild pitches to rack up the runs. Bing ‘N’ Bob’s held a 1-0 lead in the first, and a 3-2 lead in the second, and even managed to get the game tied at 4-4 through the top of the third, but too many heads up plays by Calypso proved to be costly. Calypso’s Caden Price scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning to keep the game close early, while RBI singles by Noah Daniels and Kennedy McKay kept the game close with a 4-3 lead through two.

But as the game progressed, Calypso kept finding ways to widen the gap.

Calypso earned two walks in the third, as well as earned four more runs on four more wild pitches. And in the fourth, Clypso added three more runs on four Bing ‘N’ Bob’s errors, this time stretching the lead to 11-5. The mercy rule was enforced in the bottom of the fifth, as Calypso added four more runs. Daniels got the inning started with a double, but two more Calypso walks, and two more Bing ‘N’ Bob’s errors let the game get out of reach, and crowned Calypso A League champions.

Quinn Reno started on the mound for Calypso and allowed five runs in his five innings of work. Reno gave up just four hits, while walking seven, and striking out six. Austin DelaRosa pitched the fifth inning in relief, and allowed zero runs with one strikeout.

Taylor Gopher started on the mound for Bing ‘N’ Bob’s. Gopher pitched three and one-third innings before being relieved by Ethan Roberts. Roberts was relieved by Jameson Vetter in the fifth. The Bing ‘N’ Bob’s pitching staff played hard, but unfortunately, they struggled against the Calypso batters who were very aggressive at the plate, and on the basses.

Calypso was paced by Daniels, going 4-for-4 with one RBI and two doubles. Kennedy McKay had one hit and an RBI, and Caden Price was 2-for-3 with a double. DelaRosa was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Austin Ratlif was huge, finishing 3-for-3 with three RBIs to also help pace the efforts. Hunter Lovenguth also had an RBI, and Reno had a double.

Brandon Flammond help lead Bing ‘N’ Bob’s with a single and two RBIs, while Kollin Nystrom also had an RBI and single, and Ethan Roberts had a single. Calvin White also had an RBI.

Roberts also went 1-1 with a single, while Gopher also had a hit for Bing ‘N’ Bob’s. Calypso was led by Price with two singles, while DelaRosa also had a single. McKay, DeLaRosa, and Lovenguth each had one RBI for Calypso.
