Our View: Help catch students doing the right thing

Havre Public Schools has launched an interesting program that we hope takes off with a bang

The district is working with the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce and hopefully other civic groups to pay tribute to the community's young people who do good things. Not the big things that already get people recognized, but the little day-to-day undertakings that help make our community better.

If someone falls on the street and a student helps pick them up, if someone is carrying a heavy load of groceries and a young person offers to help out, the young person will get a “Pony Way to Go Buck.” That’s a card that tells them someone in the community noted they were doing something good.

And if you are not a Pony, if you are a Star, a Knight or a Beeter, you are eligible to get saluted, also.

People can take the cards to their school or the Robins School Administration Building on 5th Avenue and their name will be put into a drawing to be held the last Friday of the month. The winner of the raffle will get a gift certificate from the Chamber that can be spent at most Havre stores.

There are — and ought to be — lots of projects designed to catch kids doing bad things. But people ought to know that most young people are a vital part of our community, and they do things that help all of us get through the day better.

We hope this new program will highlight the young people who do good things and will pay tribute to them.
