Havre 13U all-stars win one

After a great start to the state tournament weekend, the Havre Babe Ruth 13U All Stars ran into two very tough programs.

Havre hosted the 13U state tournament at Legion Field in Havre, as all stars from Havre, Glendive, Kalispell, Glacier, Hi-Line (Glasgow), and Helena all faced off, all with the hopes of claiming the 2013 state title. The tournament began o Thursday, and ran through Sunday, as Glacier finished the weekend with a 3-1 record and took home the title. Kalispell worked its way through the loser-out bracket and defeated Glacier 5-4 in the chipper to force an if-necessary game. That was Galcier’s first loss, but they rebounded nicely, and defeated Kalispell 5-1 to take home the title.

Kalispell also finished the weekend 3-1, while Helena went 2-2, Glendive went 1-2, and Hi-Line finished 0-2.

And while Havre didn’t claim the title this year, they did get off to a solid start before finishing the weekend 1-2. Thursday Havre defeated Hi-Line 4-1, but Friday, Kalispell defeated Havre 3-0, followed by a 25-6 Helena win over Havre.

In Thursday’s tournament opener, Havre managed to come away with the narrow, 4-1 victory. Hi-Line was a team that Havre defeated earlier this summer, but Havre had to play extremely well to get the job done this time around.

The defense played outstanding, committing just one error in the six innings they took the field. And that was crucial, as the defense allowed Iver Aageson to pitch the complete game, giving up just one run on four hits. Aageson had just one strikeout, allowing his defense to do their job, recording eight groundouts, six fly outs and rolling one double play.

But the offense wasn’t half bad either, as the Havre All Stars scored their four runs on seven hits, and one Hi-Line error.

A Trey Hanson RBI single gave Havre a first inning 1-0 lead, and a Hanson RBI sacrifice fly gave Havre a 2-0 second inning lead. And while the Havre lead was trimmed to 2-1 through five innings, Havre’s two runs in the sixth inning were enough to close the door. Both Hanson and Aageson recorded an RBI single in the sixth inning, as Hanson finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Aageson finished 1-for-3 with one RBI. Gavin Mosbrucker, Brady Ophus and Noah Brown had one hit each as well in the winning effort.

Unfortunately, the Havre win Thursday, didn’t propel them into a great Friday.

Kalispell was known as one of the teams to beat going into the weekend, they showed why. Havre played very well for the second straight game, but ran into a Kalispell team that handled everything that Havre could throw at them.

Kalispell scored two runs in the second inning, and held the 2-0 lead through the fifth. Brendon Danielson pitched a great game, allowing just three runs on three hits, but Havre earned just one hit, and a devastating four errors. Aageson had Havre’s only hit of the game, as Kalispell utilized three very talented pitchers to shut out the local all stars.

Errors were also crucial in the loss to Helena, a game the Havre All Stars would like to forget Helena posted 25 runs on Havre, racking up 17 total hits. Havre also committed 13 errors and gave up a 10 run inning in the sixth, eventually losing by way of mercy rule.

Havre did have six hits, as Aageson, Danielson, Mosbrucker and Murphy all had one hit each, as Murphy, Anez and Caplette also had one RBI each. Hanson also went 2-for-4 to help lead the way, as the Havre 13U season came to an end over the weekend.
