People tour historic train on display
People talk to volunteers Sunday near the Amtrak display train, which was in Havre for self-guided tours, while the eastbound Amtrak pulls out on its way toward Chicago.
A traveling display of a long-standing transportation method on the Hi-Line made an extended stop in Havre over the weekend, with people touring a classic Amtrak passenger train.
The service has a long history in Havre, with the National Railroad Passenger Corp. — Amtrak — created by Congress in 1970 and fairly well seamlessly taking over the passenger train service run by the Great Northern Railway.
The name of the signature Great Northern train, the Empire Builder, still is used for Amtrak’s train that runs along the Hi-Line between Chicago and Seattle and Portland, Ore.
The tour included interactive exhibits and examples of items from the early days of Amtrak.
A special car was to be set in honor of America’s veterans, in keeping with the service’s commitment to hire veterans in at least 25 percent of new hirings after 2015.
Information about the history of Amtrak and its current services were included in the displays.
