Big dates coming up for area athletes

Fall high school sports season about ready to begin

Summer is nowhere near over. But area high school athletes will begin counting the days until the new fall sports season officially begins.

And those important dates are now just mere days away.

First up are the Havre High golfers, who will begin practicing Aug. 15, in preparation for the Havre Golf Tournament which ia Aug. 20 at Prairie Farms Golf Course. The Blue Pony golf teams have a new staff, with Brett Gilman replacing McKinsey Rodriguez as head coach, and former Class A All-Stater Jeremy Jensen stepping in as the assistant coach.

Overall, the Blue Pony golf teams will get to play at home three times this season. Havre also hosts the annual Havre Invitational Sept. 14 at Beaver Creek Golf Course, while Prairie Farms will be the sight of the 2013 Central A Divisional Sept. 28.

Blue Pony football players report to fall camp Aug. 16. HHS head coach Jason Christenson is still at the helm, and will begin preparing his Ponies for their annual season-opener at Whitefish Aug. 31. Havre will hold its annual Blue/White Scrimmage Aug. 24 at Blue Pony Stadium. The Ponies’ home opener is set for Sept. 6 against Miles City.

Class B and Class C Eight-man teams can also begin practicing for the 2013 season Aug. 16. That means Harlem, Rocky Boy, Chinook and Chester/J-I will all get to work on that date, with season-openers for all three schools set for the weekend of Aug. 31.

Class C Six-Man teams, which include Big Sandy, North Star and Box Elder can begin practicing Aug. 19, with the first Six-Man games set for Sept. 5-6.

In the gym, the Havre High volleyball team will go back to work starting Aug. 19. The Blue Ponies, under fourth-year head coach Mel Walker, will open the season Aug. 31 at Browning. In preparation, HHS will hold its Blue/White Scrimmage Aug. 24. Havre’s first home volleyball match is slated for Sept. 26 against rival Lewistown.

Finally, the Blue Pony cross country teams, under new head coach Darci Heninger, will begin practicing Aug. 19 as well. The HHS cross country teams open the season Sept. 6 at Cut Bank. Havre’s only home meet, the Havre Invitational, is set for Oct. 5.

All athletes are reminded to have a sports physical before they can begin practicing in football, volleyball, cross country or golf.
