Rocky Boy man sentenced for throwing 1-month-old

A Rocky Boy man was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for causing severe injuries to a 1-month-old baby.

Jourden St. Marks, 23, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dana Christensen in federal court in Great Falls last week for his previous guilty plea to assault resulting in serious injury. Christensen sentenced St. Marks to three years of supervised release following the 33-month sentence.

According to a release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, St. Marks admitted to investigators that Jan. 1, 2013, he became frustrated when he could not soothe the infant he became frustrated and threw the baby at the end of the bed. The baby bounced off the end of the bed and landed on the linoleum, the release said.

The infant was transported to Northern Montana Hospital and then to the pediatrics unit at Benefis Hospital in Great Falls. The release said the baby suffered severe swelling and bruising and injuries to the head and inside of the mouth, bruising along her body and bleeding from the brain. She also showed signs of lack of oxygen.

The release did not indicate whether the infant suffered permanent damage or what is her current condition.
