Blue Ponies go low at BCGC

The Havre High boys and girls golf teams were fortunate and excited to have three home dates on the schedule this season. The season of those three home dates came Saturday when the Blue Ponies hosted the annual Havre Invitational.

The 18-hole Havre Invite, which also featured teams from Lewistown and Browning, was held Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course, and Blue Pony players certainly took advantage of playing on one of their two home courses.

Havre sophomore Jerod Boles fired a career-best 75 to take first in the boys event. Meanwhile, Blue Pony senior Nikki Gabrielsen shot a season-best 89 to place first in the girls meet. From a team-score competition, the Havre girls placed first overall, while the HHS boys finished a close second to rival Lewistown.

Gabrielsen put her best round of the season together by shooting a consistent 45-44. Sophomore teammate Payton Howard shot 44-49 to finish right behind Gabrielsen in second place. Senior Katie Beck wound up in the Top 10 as well with a 52-53 for an 18-hole total of 105, while Randi Gabrielsen was right behind her with a 106. Senior Boston Swensen rounded out the scoring for the victorious Pony girls with a 111.

“As a team, the girls did not have their best outing,” Havre head coach Brett Gilman said. “They had been playing really well up to this point, but it just wasn’t a good day team-wise.

“But Nikki Gabrielsen had a great round,” he added. “She had been struggling all season long, so it was really nice to see her break through. And Payton Howard had another really good round. She has been playing really solid lately and really consistent.”

On the boys side, Havre’s team score of 324 was its lowest of the season. Boles was stellar, firing a 38 on the front nine and going even lower, with a 37 on the back. Fellow sophomore Jeff Miller put together a solid 81, shooting 42-39 to finish in a tie for fourth, while the freshmen duo of Kane Gabrielsen and Dustin Haas each shot 84. Those scores were good enough for a tie for seventh place. Fellow frosh Aden Passon rounded out the scoring for the Havre varsity boys with a 97, while junior varsity players Trey Hanson (86) and Wyatt Lindbloom (89) would have come close to the Top 10 in the varsity meet as well.

“The boys played pretty well,” Gilman said. “Jerod and Jeff both put really nice rounds together, and really played up to their potential. And Kane and Dustin stayed right around what they have been shooting. So it was nice to see our boys team all play well at the same time because that hasn’t really happened up to this point. I think, as a team, they’re coming around and they will keep getting better from here.”

The busy week started on Friday for the Ponies when they traveled to Lewistown for the annual Lewistown Invite at Pine Meadows Golf Club. The HHS girls finished second overall with a team total of 375, and were led by scores of 91 from Beck and Howard, which was a tie for second. Nikki Gabrielsen finished with a 94 and in fourth place, while Swensen shot 97 to finish fifth. Randi Gabrielsen rounded out the scoring with a 103.

On the boys side, HHS finished third with a 357. Kane Gabrielsen shot 85 to place third with Miller right behind him at 86. Boles shot 88 to finish sixth overall, while Haas shot 98 and Passon 99.

Havre has one more week before hosting the Central A Divisional Sept. 28 at Prairie Farms Golf Course. Thursday, the Blue Ponies will attend the Billings Central Invite in Billings, then play the Laurel Invite Friday.
