Pioneers squeak by Bears: Hawks roll

Everybody knows that conference football games mean the most. And while it is still early in the season, several Hi-Line squads faced a conference rival over the weekend.

In Northern C Six-Man action, the Box Elder Bears hosted the rival Big Sandy Pioneers Saturday. With the Pioneer win and Bears loss, both teams now stand at 1-1 this season. Big Sandy defeated Box Elder 46-43 in an offensive shootout.

Neither team scored in the third quarter, but there were plenty of points to go around, as the Pioneers took the 18-6 first quarter lead. The Bears were playing catch up all game long, but did outscore the Pioneers 18-14 in the second quarter and 19-14 in the fourth. But it was the lopsided first quarter that helped propel Big Sandy to its first win of the season.

Jerry Hanson was the biggest factor in the Big Sandy win, as he had another huge weekend, rushing 24 times for 232 yards. Hanson also scored on a five-yard run, a 46-yard reception, a 55-yard run, a 24-yard run and a 23-yard run. Bodis Duran, Brandon The Boy and Will Ketchum had the big day for the Bears, as they combined for all seven scores. Duran scored on a 50-yard kick return, a 20-yard pass from The Boy, and a 15-yard pass from The Boy. Ketchum scored on a 10-yard pass from The Boy, on a 55-yard kick return, and a 45-yard kick return. The Boy also connected with Jake Jones on a 34-yard pass.

The Bears will face Stanford/Geyser Saturday, and the Pioneers will play Friday, when they host North Star in Big Sandy at 7 p.m.

Seth Adams did however have another solid outing for the Wildcats.

Adams rushed for 228 yards and added two more rushing scores. Adams scored on a 5-yard run and a 19-yard run. And while Adams had another huge day, it wasn’t enough to stay competitive with the Coyotes, who ran away with an 18-point third quarter.
