Havre man donates over 2,000 pounds of food to Food Bank

Bob Doney, the owner of Bob’s Greenhouse, has been donating to the Havre Food Bank for three years.

“This season, he’s donated well over 2,000 pounds of produce,” said Lorna Bjerga, the manager of the food bank for the last year and a half.

Doney grows the produce in the garden at his business, Bob’s Greenhouse, which sells garden supplies.

Doney said most of the produce he grows in this garden primarily goes to donations to the food bank. He has donated around 2,000 pounds every year, depending on the harvest, since he started donating to the food bank.

Bjerga said once harvest season is over, the food bank runs primarily on donations from Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, Walmart and the community.

“We will accept canned foods, frozen foods and wild game,” Bjerga said. “We would love to get some wild game this year, but it has to be processed first.”

Other organizations and community members who have made great contributions to the food bank include, but are not limited to: Town Pump, the Gildford Colony, Fifth Avenue Christian Church and Mark Kittleson, who periodically gives the food bank $500.

Town Pump has a program in which, for every dollar donated to the food bank from the community, they double the amount.

The Havre Food Bank was begun 26 years ago and was originally at the bottom of the St. Jude Thaddeus Church, according to Bjerga.

Those interested in picking up food from the food bank can fill out an application at the store. Qualification is based on income.

The Havre Food Bank is located at 453 5th St. N. and its hours are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays year-round.
