HHS heads to Conrad

On Saturday, the Havre High volleyball team will attempt to grab a third straight win.

And on a weekend with just one match, the Central A Blue Ponies can throw everything they have at the nonconference match. Saturday the Ponies will travel to Conrad to take on the Class B Conrad Cowgirls for the second time this season.

In the first meeting, just last week, the Ponies defeated the Cowgirls in five games by scores of 25-21, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25, and 16-14. That match was played at the Havre High Gymnasium in Havre, and fortunately the Ponies had their home fans to help cheer them to a victory. Facing the Cowgirls in Conrad will present the Ponies with an even tougher matchup, and it could very well take the Ponies another five games to earn the season sweep.

And if the Ponies are going to return home with a win, they have to show the same no quit attitude that helped them the first time.

Conrad has the athleticism and skill players to control a match. They like to grab the momentum early, and it is hard to capture from the Cowgirls when they do. The Cowgirls score a lot of points on big runs and they proved that in Havre. And with big time hitters like Emily Harwood (12 kills in the last meeting), the Cowgirls should perform even better at home. Conrad also houses force up front in Krista Judisch, a solid one-two punch with Harwood who typically lead the team in blocks, kills, and digs.

Playing on the road, the Ponies need to play very consistent. After going point for point with the Cowgirls last week some errors continued to haunt the Ponies. But if they don’t hurt themselves, and take advantage of any Conrad errors, the Ponies do have what it takes to record another win. Lacey Waid and Martha Stocker both had great outings, totaling 14 kills last meeting, and should have big days again. But it is also going to take a great showing from the defense and serve receive from Havre. Hopefully HHS won’t have to earn nearly 90 digs like they did last time around, but it might come to that with the talented hitters Conrad houses. The Ponies also gave up 12 aces, and know they can’t do that again as they attempt to stay hot on the road.

If it takes another five sets, or the Ponies take the match in three, the Ponies need a win on Saturday. Including Conrad, the Ponies have just two more nonconference wins before the remainder of their conference schedule and the divisional tournament. And sitting at 5-6 overall and 2-1 in the Central A, the Ponies are looking to not only grab a win, but also grab some momentum to propel them through the rest of the regular season.

Saturday the Ponies and Cowgirls will faceoff for the second time this season, playing in Conrad.
