Pony harriers race to the finish line

Havre girls place an outstanding fourth at Class A state cross country meet; Haley Ohm earns All-State honors

Success isn't always measured in trophies and medals. And heading into Saturday's Class A state cross country meet, the Havre High boys and girls cross country teams could have already called the season a success.

But an outstanding day by the Blue Pony girls and strong times by the HHS boys capped off an already successful season. The Pony girls finished an outstanding fourth and the HHS boys placed 11th overall at the Class A state meet Saturday at the University of Montana Golf Course in Missoula.

The Pony girls, who won the Central A Divisional a week ago, scored 166 points Saturday, finishing only behind state champion Corvallis, as well as Whitefish and Billings Central. HHS also got an All-State performance by Haley Ohm. The senior, racing in her first cross country season, finished the meet with a time of 19:40, which was good enough for 14th place.

"I was really happy with the way the girls came out," first-year head coach Darci Heninger said. "They did great as a team, they competed as hard as they could and they all did such a great job."

Coming in behind Ohm was junior Morgan Mazurkiewicz, who finished 25th overall with a time of 20:38. Senior Peyton Filius, another first-year runner, and who has battled injury problems throughout the season, finished in 31st place with a time of 20:52, while Rachel David wasn't far behind in 36th. That group gave HHS a solid pack time, and enabled the Ponies to get within striking distance of a trophy.

McKenna Barkus (6oth), Kiana Robertson (89th) and Emily Brurud (98th) rounded out the scoring for the HHS girls.

"With all of the sickness and injury problems the girls have went through this year," Heninger said. "I think the team we took to state did great. All the girls ran really well and did a great job. I was really excited."

A young HHS boys team had its moments too, though the Class A field was loaded to the point, it was tough for Havre to keep pace. The Ponies scored 278, while Hamilton captured the Class A title with 48 points. Corvallis was a distant second and Laurel was third.

"It was kind of a tough season for the boys," Heninger said. "Mainly because the competition was so tough. There were some really fast times. But the boys worked really hard, and at state, they all ran times that were even better than I expected. So they did a great job."

Elijah David was the top HHS finisher with a time of 17:22. That put David in 37th place overall, while Sundance Lodge was 44th with a time of 17:32 and Brandon Robertson was 47th at 17:32. Brock Ross was next for Havre in 57th place, followed by Dylan Stewart (92nd), Ethan Smith (112th) and Cameron Knapton (124th).

And thought the Ponies didn't bring home any hardware from Missoula, again, the season was no less successful. It was a great year for HHS cross country, and Heninger was estatic about it.

"I'm glad I got the opportunity," she said. "I was excited to get to know all these kids and they made it a really fun season. All the kids did great and competed hard. It was a great experience."
