Provost candidates have varied backgrounds

The candidates of the provost position at Montana State University-Northern come from all around the country and specialize in a array of areas.

Each candidate will be individually interviewed at open forum starting next week.

The community is invited to each forum to meet the candidates. Those who attend the meetings “will be encouraged to fill out an evaluation form for each of the candidates,” a press release from the Directory of University Relations Jim Potter says. “The search committee will compile the comments and a list of pros and cons on the finalists that will be sent to the chancellor for his review.”

The plan is to have the position filled by Jan. 1, the press release says.

Ronald Hy

Ronald Hy, the associate provost for academic excellence at the University of North Texas at Dallas, has a doctorate from Miami University, a master’s degree from Central Michigan University and a bachelor’s degree in science from Central Michigan University.

Previous jobs Hy has had are professor and dean for the department of political science at Texas A&M University and professor and chair of the department of geography, political science and sociology at the University of Central Arkansas.

William Baker

William Baker, the academic dean at Arizona Christian University, has a doctorate in zoology from Arizona State University, a master’s degree in education from Grand Canyon University and a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Washington.

Previous jobs Baker has held are program coordinator and professor for the biomedical sciences program at Midwestern University and instructional specialist at the Maricopa County Community College District.

Larry Strizich

Larry Strizich, the chair and professor of engineering technology and computer information at Northern, has a doctorate in education and teaching from Montana State University, a master’s degree of engineering in computer engineering from the University of Idaho, a Master of Ccience degree in industrial and management engineering from MSU and a bachelor’s degree of science in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado.

Previous jobs he has held are professor in electronics and computer engineering technology at Northern and a surface line officer in the United States Naval Reserve.

John Shoup

John Shoup, the dean for the School of Education at California Baptist University, has a doctorate in education with a concentration in educational administration and policy studies from the University of California, a master’s degree of arts in counseling psychology and master of divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School and a bachelor’s degree of arts in social work from the University of Montana.

Previous jobs he has held are professor in the school of education at California Baptist University and a principal at Arrowhead Christian Academy.

William Rugg

William Rugg, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Northeastern State University, has a doctorate in higher education administration and student services from the University of Mississippi, a master’s degree in speech communication and broadcasting for Utah State University and a bachelor’s degree in English and theatre from Barrington College.

Previous jobs he has held are chief educational consultant, board member and online faculty member for the CXR Customer Experience Institute and chief academic officer for the Prospect Education/Charter Colleges.

Michael Oudshoorn

Michael Oudshoorn, former dean of academic affairs at DeVry University, has a doctorate in computer science from the University of Adelaide, and an honor’s degree of bachelor’s in computer science from the University of Adelaide. An honor’s degree is comparable to a master’s degree in Australia.

Previous positions he has held are interim associate dean of liberal arts and sciences at DeVry University, professor of computer science and chair of department for the department of computer science at Montclair State University.

Potter said in a press release that a 12-person search committee has been working since October to “find the best possible candidates to assume the role of provost for MSU-Northern.”

The committee went through 50 applications. and they had telephone interviews with 15 of the applicants, before they settled on the above six.

All the interview forums for the candidates will be at 2 p.m. each respective day, at the Hensler Auditorium in the Applied Technology Center.

William Rugg — Dec. 11
