Lights remain No.2 in new NAIA Poll, 10 grapplers ranked

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team remained the No. 2 team in NAIA wrestling following the release of the second NAIA Coaches Poll of the season.

The poll, released Wednesday, saw the Lights ranked a mere half point behind top-ranked Grand View. Missouri Valley, Campblesville of Kentucky and Great Falls round out the Top 5. Northern is coming off an impressive showing at last weekend’s Battle of the Rockies in Great Falls. The Lights were especially strong in the dual portion of the event, as they knocked off Simpson University, ranked No. 9, Indiana Tech, now ranked No. 11 and Dickinson State, which was ranked No. 17 last week. In the newest poll, four Western Region teams are ranked in the Top 10, with Southern Oregon No. 7 and Simpson at No. 9.

Individually, the Lights currently hold 10 national spots. Junior Aaron LaFarge and sophomore Duell Stadel continue to be ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at 125 pounds, respectively. MSU-N junior Ethan Hinebauch also held on to the No. 2 spot at 165 pounds, while Mickey Cheff remained No. 3 at 157 and Toby Cheff stayed at No. 4 at 197, as did Cameron Neiss at 141. The Lights aren’t just doubled up at 125 pounds either. Red-shirt freshman Garrett DeMers is currently ranked No. 7 at 197.

Senior Kody Reed moved up one spot, to No. 6 at 184 pounds this week, while Hunter Azure jumped five spots, to No. 7 at 149 pounds. Jared Miller is ranked No. 10 at 174, moving up two spots in the new poll.

Northern is off this week, and will return to action Dec. 22 at the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions.

In other college wrestling news, former Chinook star, and Wyoming red-shirt freshman Ben Stroh is ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Division I WCC. Stroh wrestles at 184 pounds for the Cowboys.
