MSU-N matmen remain No. 2 in NAIA

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will get back on the mat this coming weekend, after a well-deserved holiday break. And the Lights will do so as the No. 2 team in the nation.

In the latest NAIA Coaches Poll, MSU-N held steady at No. 2, with only Grand View ranked ahead of the Lights. Fellow Western Region members UGF and Southern Oregon moved up in the poll, with the Argos ranked No. 4 and SOU ranked No. 6.

The Western Region certainly appears to be the strongest in the country right now with three of the top six teams in the coaches poll. Also ranked is No. 15 Simpson and No. 18 Menlo, while Embry-Riddle is just outside the Top 20.

Individually, the Lights didn’t see much movement in the new poll. Junior Aaron LaFarge continues to hold the No. 1 spot at 125 pounds, while Ethan Hinebauch remained No. 2 at 165 pounds. Senior Cameron Neiss also held the No. 4 spot at 141 pounds, while junior Mickey Cheff stayed at No. 3 at 157 pounds. Toby Cheff also remained No. 4 ay 197 pounds.

MSU-N freshman Garrett DeMers moved up one spot at 197, and is now ranked No. 6, while Jared Miller is ranked No. 10 at 174 and Hunter Azure is ranked No. 9 at 149 pounds. The Lights are currently without sophomore Duell Stadel, and he dropped out of the poll at 125 pounds.

The second half of MSU-N’s season begins this weekend with the NAIA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa. MSU-N will then host Western Wyoming in a dual on Jan. 18. The month also includes road duals at Northwest College and Western Wyoming.
