Hi-Line film to be shown in Havre, Harlem

"Winter in the Blood," the film based on the James Welch novel, will have its Hi-Line premiere on Sunday, Feb. 2, and Monday, Feb. 3, at Cottonwood Cinema 4 in Havre.

The film will also be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at Harlem High School as part of Fort Belknap Indian Reservation's Mid-winter Festival.

Havre's showings will be at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on both nights.

Andrew Smith, co-director of the movie, shot largely in Havre, Chinook and Fort Belknap, said efforts are being made to get Chaske Spencer, who plays the role of Virgil First Raise, to attend the opening of the film.

Julia Jones, who plays the role of First Raise's wife, Agnes, may also be in Havre.

The film was shot on many Havre and Chinook locations, including 4B's Restaurant, the streets of downtown Havre and several taverns.

The movie is co-directed by Andrew and Alex Smith, twin brothers from Missoula.

It premiered in Missoula last year, and has been shown in places ranging from Minneapolis and London.

The movie opens with First Raise awakening to a shiner and a hangover on the side of the road.

He sees a vision of his father lying at his feet. His father froze to death in a snowdrift years before.

He returns home to find that Agnes had left him, taking his beloved rifle.

Hi Geez, I'm the page designer at the HDN. We've done many stories about Winter in the Blood in the last two years, including many photos of Chaske Spencer and other Native actors involved in the production. Check out the story about Alex Escarcega, a kid from Box Elder who has a role in the film, www.havredailynews.com/story/2012/01/01/local/from-rocky-boy-to-hollywood/102625.html. The file photo we ran with Wednesday's story was one of the few images we have from outdoor filming in Havre.

would have been nice if the picture would have been Chaske Spencer or the other Native Americans featured in this predominately native American film rather than Caucasian?
