Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Chester/J-I wins three, Chinook sweeps

With the holiday break now in the rearview mirror, area girls high school basketball is in full swing. And tournament time is already just around the corner.

The past week of high school basketball was a full one, as games got started Tuesday and ran all the way through Saturday night.

Last Tuesday night, the Chinook Sugarbeeters continued their unbeaten march by thumping Dodson 77-46. Makhayla Farmer scored a game-high 22 points for the Beeters, but she got plenty of help as Katelyn Neibauer added 15, Brooke Nicholson scored nine and Talya Johnson added eight.

Tuesday night wasn’t as kind to the Harlem Wildcats. In a makeup game, the Malta M-Ettes crushed the Wildcats 62-13 in Malta. Harlem never scored more than four points in a quarter and it couldn’t slow down the M-Ette offense. Techa Ereaux led the Cats with five points.

Action resumed last Thursday night, and it was the start of a big weekend for the Chester/J-I Hawks. C/J-I downed 10C rival Dutton-Brady 48-23 behind 17 points from Haley Harmon and another nine by Erin Wolfe.

The Big Sandy Pioneers were also victorious at home Thursday night. Hosting Hobson, the Pioneers won 54-38. Big Sandy outscored the Tigers 31-9 in the first half and never looked back.

Molly Herron poured in 23 points to pace Big Sandy. Shelby Gasvoda chipped in with nine in the win.

Moving back into 9C play Friday night, the Pioneers became the latest victim on Chinook’s list. In Chinook, the Beeters raced past the Pioneers 69-44. The Pioneers stayed within striking distance through three quarters, but the Beeters closed the game on a 24-10 run.

Makhayla Farmer scored 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, while Katelyn Neibauer added 15 and Hannah Weber scored 10 for Chinook. Gasvoda paced Big Sandy with 10 points, while Abby Gregory added seven.

Chester/J-I kept rolling through conference play as well Friday night. In Power, the Hawks blew out the host Pirates 55-16. Denerey Haaland scored a game-high 17 points for C/J-I, while Alixx Goldhahn added 10.

In another 9C showdown Friday night, the Box Elder Bears raced by struggling Hays-Lodge Pole, 77-16 in Hays. Alicia Wolf Chief scored 12 points, while Kiona Gardipee and Stephanie Sutherland each scored 10 for the Bears. Rose Snell tallied 11 points for HLP.

Out of conference play, the Turner Tornadoes had a rough go Friday night as they were drubbed by 7C power Roy-Winifred, 66-23. Turner played well in the first half, but couldn’t keep up with the Outlaws for all four quarters. Ella Billmayer did have a great game for Turner, scoring 18 points.

Rocky Boy also stepped out of conference play to take on Malta Friday night in Rocky Boy, and the M-Ettes continued their torrid pace. Malta started the game on a 25-11 run and overwhelmed the Morning Stars 66-20. Chanal Standing Rock scored 13 points for Rocky Boy in the loss.

In another nonleague game Friday night, the North Star Knights won in Sunburst, 45-22. Tylynn Rettig scored 10 points against the Refiners, while Bettie Carlon chipped in with eight.

The Knights then moved on to their rivalry with Chester/J-I on Saturday night. However, it was the Hawks who out-lasted the Knights 43-33 in Chester. C/J-I trailed 17-14 at the half, but rallied to outscored the Knights 29-16 the rest of the way, and remain unbeaten on the season.

Peyton Cole led all scorers with 13 points, but the Hawks also got 11 from Haley Harmon. North Star was led by Mackenzie Hansen’s 12 points.

Saturday night also saw Harlem lose a heartbreaker to Glasgow, 42-40 in Glasgow. The Wildcats led 18-11 at the break, but the Scotties rebounded in the third quarter. Harlem rallied in the fourth but came up short at the buzzer. Brooke Lavaldo scored 10 points and Monique Doney added eight in the tough loss.

Things weren’t nearly as difficult for Chinook Saturday night. The Beeters had no trouble staying undefeated as they blew out 9C rival Turner, 72-10 in Turner. Makhayla Farmer led the way with 13 points, but Chinook was balanced as 10 different Beeters scored, including Talya Johnson with 11. Four other Beeters added eight points each. Ella Billmayer led Turner with seven points.

Hays-Lodge Pole had as tough a time as Turner did, losing 78-17 at Roy-Winifred. The Thunderbirds are still searching for their first win this season.
