A.F. (Burk) Burkhartsmeyer

A.F. (Burk) Burkhartsmeyer was born July 13, 1918, near Goldstone, Mont., in Hill County, to Gottlieb and Josephine (Gisinger) Burkhartsmeyer. He achieved the rank of sergeant in the 41st U.S. Army Infantry Division in World War II and was wounded on Biak Island, New Guinea. Co. A, 162nd Regiment received a Unit Citation for 76 days of continuous combat in the Salamaua, New Guinea, campaign. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

After the war, he married Gladys Rambo in Hingham, Mont., and ranched north of Gildford. In 1964, he continued ranching south of Chinook until he retired in 1978.

Feeding was usually done with a team of horses, and he worked them as a hobby for a few years after retirement. He stayed active in ranching for many years after retiring. He was a calf roper and team roper and operated a harness and saddle repair shop for many years. He played guitar at dances when he was younger and enjoyed dancing for most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gladys; his daughter, Ann (Hansen), his granddaughter, Julie Hansen; his brother, Mike; and sisters. Christine (Hanses) and Katherine (Yeager).

He is survived by his children, John (Judy), Mark (LuAnn), Jean Kiel, Paul (Nancy), Bill (Nicole), Mary Jo (Joe) Pavnica, Frank (Kathy) and Tom; 18 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He died at the Sweet Memorial Nursing Home in Chinook on Jan. 5. Services were held on Jan. 13.
