Hi-Line Boys Basketball Roundup

Box Elder rolls on; C/J-I wins twice

With a lot of teams reaching the midway point in the season, wins are growing more and more crucial, and for some Hi-Line boys’ teams, they are still hard to come by, especially in district play.

Last Thursday the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds defeated the Turner Tornadoes 82-48 in Turner. The 9C matchup was lopsided and led by HLP’s Tyson Shambo’s 19 pionts. But Nate Doney and Sterling White Cow also scored 16 points each for the Thunderbirds, while Turner got 17 from Bret Van Valkenburg and 10 from Lucas Reed.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters and North Star Knights also met in a 9C clash in Chinook Friday.

North star was shut out in the first quarter as the Beeters jumped out to a 16-0 lead. From there it was all Chinook as Lane Seymour finished with 15 points and Jake Diemert finished with 12. Zach Molyneaux also finished with 11 for the Beeters. Jaxon Simonson paced the Knights with eight points and Quinn Spinler and Payton Peterson combined for another eight.

In District 1B play, the Rocky Boy Stars were able to grab a league win when they defeated the Conrad Cowboys in Conrad. The return of Junior Day Child certainly gave the Stars a boost.

Day Child helped the Stars with 22 points. It was Day Child’s first outing of the season. But the Stars were led by Cecil Lafromboise who finished with 25 points, while Desmond Parker and Bubby Gopher each scored eight points.

In Heart Butte, the Chester/J-I Hawks also took down Heart Butte 51-30 Friday. The Hawks have hovered near the top of the 10C this season, while Heart Butte has struggled to find wins this season.

The Hawks earned the 21-point win after jumping all over the opposition 26-10 in the first half. Steven May led the Hawks with 11 points but got plenty of help from Dell Harmon’s nine, Justin May’s nine, and a combined 10 from Cody Ramberg and Klayton Lohr.

Harlem lost a heartbreaker in overtime Friday.

Wolf Point hosted the 2B Wildcats and the game was settled in overtime. The Wolves defeated the Wildcats 51-50, outdoing Stanley Irvine’s and Isaiah Lawrence’s 14 points each. Harlem led 13-5 after the first frame and even posted 17 in the second quarter. But it was the third quarter that did the Wildcats in as the Wolves outscored the Wildcats 14-6 to close the gap.

Big Sandy fell in nonleague play Friday, hosting Roy-Winifred. It was a 70-44 loss that saw the Pioneers fighting to the very end with 30 points in the second half. But the defense wasn’t able to limit the opposition, as they were outscored by three in the final two quarters. T.J. Shipp led the Pioneers with 18 points, followed by Jerry Hanson’s 12.

The top-ranked Box Elder Bears wrapped up play Friday with a blowout win over Sunburst in nonleague play on the road. The Bears earned another impressive win, this time 80-51, including a 29 point third quarter.

Randall Gardipee led all scorers with 33 points, including two 3-pointers. Jacob Jones followed with 10 points, while Brandon The Boy and Thomas Parisian scored eight points each. The Boy also had two treys.

But as impressive as the Bears were on Friday, they outdid themselves on Saturday in a 9C matchup with the Turner Tornadoes in Box Elder.

The Bears defeated the Tornadoes 104-37. Turner scored 11 points in three of the fourth quarters, but the Bears poorest quarter was their 21 points in the final frame. Prior, the Bears posted 28, 28, and 27 through the first three frames.

Reed scored 14 for the Tornadoes, but the Bears had three individuals finish with double digits. The Boy finished with 16, Gardipee finished with 18, and Chris LaMere finished with 15.

The Thunderbirds also helped their cause to fight for the second-place spot behind the league leading Bears with a 9C win Saturday. The Thunderbirds defeated the struggling Pioneers 55-30 at home.

After leading 27-13 after a half, the Thunderbirds put the game away with a 20-point third quarter. Jerry Hanson led the Pinoeers with 15 but got little help. White Cow led the Thunderbirds with 17, followed by Frank Runs Above’s 11.

North Star dropped another game Saturday, this time a 54-31 loss to Stanford-Geyser-Denton in Rudyard. Two points in the first quarter put the Knights in a deep hole and never recovered. Jaxon Simonson led the Knights again, this time seven. Spinler and Sam Ulmen both scored six.

Harlem was able to grab a win before the weekend ended, edging Plentywood by nine at home. The Wildcats won 56-47.

The Wildcats overcame an early deficit, but used a 20 point second quarter to help earn the win. Lawrence also played a major role with his 19 points, while Irvine followed with another 18.

A new week began for the Turner Tornadoes as they traveled to take on the Havre High freshman team Monday night at the HHS gymnasium. However, it was some Blue Pony magic that ended what looked like a sure Turner win.

Havre stormed back from a nine-point deficit in the final two minutes, forcing overtime on a 3-pointer as regulation came to an end. Turner again looked like it had the game won in the extra frame. Leading by one point with just seconds left, Havre raced down the floor and though the Ponies missed their first attempt at the game-winning shot, Ryan Bakke was there for a putback at the horn, as the Ponies won 74-73.

Bakke paced the Ponies with 17 points, while Bobby Persenett scored 14 and Jacob Labrie added 11. Turner was led by Lucas Reed’s game-high 27 points. Brett VanValkenburg added 20 in the difficult loss.
