Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

Rocky Boy, Harlem earn rebound victories

One week is all that stands between area Class B and C girls basketball teams and district tournament time. And that’s why last week was such a big one up and down the Hi-Line.

Chinook locked up at least a share of the District 9C regular season title this past week, starting with a dominating 77-10 win over Hays-Lodge Pole last Thursday night in Hays. The powerful Sugarbeeters scored 42 points in the first quarter against the winless Thunderbirds. Freshman Taylor Neibauer scored 20 points for the Beeters, while Brooke Nicholson added 13. Cory Carrywater scored four points for HLP.

Big Sandy notched a non-conference win Thursday night, beating Hobson 40-32 on the road. The Pioneers, who got 20 points from senior Molly Herron in the win over the Tigers, got some much-needed momentum heading into Friday night’s showdown with the Beeters in Chinook.

However, in a hard-fought game, the Beeters stopped Big Sandy’s momentum, winning 45-38. Big Sandy forged a 20-20 halftime tie, but Chinook inched away by outscoring the Beeters 25-18 in the final 16 minutes.

Makhayla Farmer scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Chinook, while Katelyn Neibauer added 11. Herron was clutch again for Big sandy, totaling 18 points and making three 3-pointers.

In another key 9C game Friday night, Box Elder stayed close to the top of the standings with an 86-12 throttling of HLP. Alyssa Lamere led five Bears in double figures with 17 points. Tia Russell and Alicia Wolf Chief both chipped in with 13 points, while the T-Birds got five points by Treaunna Stiffarm.

While Chinook has romped through the 9C this season, North Star has kept pace. The Knights stepped out of league play and beat Sunburst 57-31 Friday night on the road. A 21-7 third-quarter run propelled the Knights to the win. Bettie Carlon led the way with 12 points, but Sheridan O’Neil added 11 for the victorious Knights.

Things didn’t go as well for Turner Friday night. The Tornadoes were crushed by 7C power Roy-Winifred 70-7 in Roy. The Outlaws showed little mercy, outscoring Turner 54-4 in the first half. Ella Billmayer posted three points for Turner in the loss.

Rocky Boy was also stung Friday night, losing 70-30 at District 2B rival Malta. The M-Ettes started the game on a 21-5 run and never looked back. Top scorer Chanel Standing Rock was limited to a team-high eight points for the Morning Stars.

It’s been a great season in Chester, and the Chester/J-I Hawks kept it going Friday night, thrashing Power 66-21 in a 10C showdown. The Hawks outscored the Pirates 23-6 in the first eight minutes on their way to an easy win. Allix Goldhahn scored 19 points for C/J-I, while Haley Harmon and Denerey Haaland each scored 15.

The Hawks then stepped out of conference for a Hi-Line rivalry tilt Saturday night at North Star. And again, C/J-I rolled to victory, beating the Knights 42-25. The Hawks only held a 17-15 lead at halftime, and the game wasn’t out of reach for the Knights after three quarters. But C/J-I’s defense limited North Star to just four points in the fourth quarter and ran away with the game.

Harmon and Haaland scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, while Madeline Woods added nine for C/J-I. Bettie Carlon led North Star with 14 points, while Mackenzie Hansen added nine.

Chinook made it a clean 9C sweep for the weekend, as the Beeters trounced Turner 67-9 Saturday night in Turner. The Beeters outscored the Tornadoes 45-3 in the first 16 minutes. Makhayla Farmer scored 14 points for Chinook, yet Katelyn Neibauer added 13 and Emily Dennis tallied 11. Kristina Conlan was tops for Turner with just four points.

The Harlem Wildcats suffered a gut-wrenching 50-49 loss to 2B rival Glasgow on Thursday night in Harlem. The Wildcats played valiantly against the Scotties, but came up short in the final seconds. Still, Harlem got back on track with a 37-33 win at 1B rival Shelby on Saturday night. Harlem trailed 22-17 at the half, but stormed back in the second half to win. Coco Moore and Jaycee Werk each scored 11 for Harlem.

Saturday was also a bounce back night for Rocky Boy. In a huge 1B upset, the Morning Stars beat Choteau 50-48 in Rocky Boy. Rocky Boy opened a big lead in the third quarter, then held the Bulldogs off in the final minutes for the much-needed 1B win. Jaylynn Day Child paced the Morning Stars with 14 points, while Chanel Standing Rock added 13.

Box Elder and HLP couldn’t secure Saturday wins however.

In Heart Butte, the Bears lost to the 10C Warriors 68-55. Alicia Wolf Chief scored a game-high 13 for Box Elder. Meanwhile, the T-Birds were Roy-Winifred’s second 9C victim of the week. The Outlaws dispatched HLP 74-20 in Hays. Cory Carrywater did score 10 points in the loss for HLP.

This coming weekend marks the end of the regular season for all area Class B and Class C teams. The District 9C tournament runs Feb. 19-22 at the Havre High gymnasium.
