Legislator seeks new term despite legal challenge

February 19, 2014

HELENA (AP) — A Montana legislator who is defending himself against allegations that he took illegal corporate contributions has filed to run for another term.

Republican Rep. Mike Miller of Helmville filed with the Montana Secretary of State's Office Wednesday to run for House District 80.

Last month, Commissioner of Political Practices Jonathan Motl lodged a civil action against Miller in state court.

Motl is asking a judge to uphold his findings that Miller took illegal contributions from and illegally coordinated with the secretive conservative group Western Tradition Partnership in 2010.

If upheld, Miller could be barred from holding or running for office. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Miller did not immediately return a call for comment. He previously said if he didn't run, it would appear he let Motl drive him out of office.
