Indians get their revenge on Havre High boys

Ponies fall in Browning, will face Indians again Friday in Belgrade

It is always tough suffering a conference loss to end the regular season, but fortunately for the Havre High boys, the team wasn’t knocked too far down in the league standings.

Saturday night in Browning the Central A Blue Ponies suffered a 78-57 loss to the Indians.

The season finale loss gave the Ponies a 4-4 Central A record and 6-12 record overall. The loss also gave the Ponies a third place finish and the Indians a second place finish heading into the post season. The finish would have been reversed if the Ponies would have come away with the win. But with either result, the Ponies and Indians will meet again on Friday at the divisional tournament in Belgrade.

“They came out and shot the ball very well against us.” Havre High head coach Curt Leeds said. “They had a kid who doesn’t normally start get the start, and he hit five 3-pointers for them. But they were emotionally ready, they had ceremony for (Trevor Gray) because his mom was diagnosed with cancer, and he really stepped for them and finished with 19 of their points. I think they were just more emotionally ready to play than we were.”

Gray’s five treys and 19 points led the Indians that jumped out to a 20-11 first quarter lead and 41-22 lead at the half. Jake Bell finished with 13 and Brandon Galbreath finished with nine. The Indians jumped out to a big lead and didn’t let up, adding 26 in the third and 11 in the fourth. Browning also shot 45 percent from two point range and 41 percent from 3-point range.

Havre played all four quarters in their man-to-man defense and that did result in some runs of points for the Indians. But getting their man defense ready for the tournament was an important task to deal with.

“We played man the whole game.” Leeds said. “And it didn’t look too bad, it was just them getting transition buckets off of our turnovers. They probably had 30 points if not more off of our turnovers, and really that is what that hurt us, we had 26. Browning pressed us, but it wasn’t a hard press, we were just making bad decisions. We just didn’t play very well.”

And struggling against a press was uncharacteristic of the Ponies. HHS has played well against the press this year. But the offense struggled overall on Saturday. HHS did shoot 52 percent from two-point range, and was led by Dane Warp’s 25. Nate Rismon scored 11.

It wasn’t the strongest outing to end the regular season, but the Ponies will rebound Thursday through Saturday when they face the Central A in Belgrade.
