School board honors wrestling, football players

The Havre Public School Board of Trustees met Tuesday night to honor football and wrestling students, approve student travel to Europe and buy two new buses.

Superintendent Andy Carlson told the large audience at the meeting that, sometimes, the difficulty achieving the success the Havre football players and wrestlers have reached is taken for granted and the school district wanted to give them achievement awards for the good work they have done.

Carlson spoke of how proud he was when people approached him at the wrestling tournament and talked of how the wrestlers were not only good at their sport, but also good sports, as well.

Marie Deegan, a Spanish teacher at Havre High School, presented the school board with a pamphlet of where her and seven of the students in her Spanish club plan to travel in June.

From June 11 to June 20, the seven students will have the opportunity to visit London, Paris and Madrid. The trip is paid for by the club's own money and the students will have a chance to travel with a group of students from all over the United States.

"It's more than you can ever teach in the classroom," Deegan said.

The board unanimously voted in favor of the trip.

Carlson gave a presentation of how much revenue the school is bringing in through taxes as part of the call for a vote on whether or not to change the taxes taken from the public. At next month's school board meeting, April 8, the board will decide to raise, lower, or maintain the tax rates the people of Hill County pay. Carlson suggested the tax rates not be raised.

The school board could not raise the taxes for the high school if they wanted to, Carlson said, as the rate is maxed-out. They could only raise taxes for the elementary schools.

"The only way to get more money is to have more students ...," Carlson said. "We don't want people getting surprises on their taxes."

Mike Arnold presented the bid for two new buses for the districts at $99,500 each. The school board voted unanimously to allow the purchase.
