Authorities: Gunman was Robert Jay Thomas

Robert Jay Thomas, 25, of Cut Bank has been identified as the gunman who held police at bay for nearly 21 hours in downtown Havre earlier this week.

R.J. Brown, Fergus County coroner, said that after an autopsy by a deputy Montana medical examiner, he concluded that Thomas died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Brown said that as required by Montana law, an inquest will be held at an undetermined date.

An agent from the Montana Department of Criminal Investigation will conduct the investigation, Brown said.

Authorities have not revealed the gunman's identity until now.

Details in Friday's Havre Daily News.
