City looks to fund Bullhook repairs

'Environmental heroes' lauded

Havre City Council met Monday to move forward with the Bullhook repair plans and hear from the Recycle Hi-Line program.

Candi Zion, chair of Recycle Hi-Line, stood before City Council and spoke of the success of her group's programs and to give out three Environmental Hero Awards to people in Havre who have taken an extra step to do their part to preserve the environment.

Joseph Vernon, the sustainability coordinator at Montana State University-Northern, received the award for his work in revitalizing the recycling program at the campus and for acquiring funds from the university to start a one-year pilot program to recycle #5 plastics.

Walt Ball, the administrator of Eagles Manor, was given the award for running the successful recycling initiative at the manor. His success enabled the manor to apply for and receive a grant to fund recycling projects at the retirement home.

Bob and Kathy Doney also received an award for the environmental work they do at their business, Bob's Greenhouse, including recycling plastic planters and storing glass for recycling.

City Clerk and Finance Director Doug Kaercher read two proclamations from the mayor, deeming Monday Arbor Day and today Earth Day.

Council also voted to adopt the preliminary engineering report on Bullhook drainage system problems. After hearing no qualms from the community about any environmental concerns, council was able to move forward with their plans.

Council voted to apply for the Treasure State Endowment Program grant, which will used to fund the repairs along the Bullhook.

The Havre Eagles Club asked the council for permission to block off 2nd Avenue between 1st and 2nd streets Saturday, May 24, for the annual Eagle Riders Charity Ride.

Motorcyclists will begin riding in the morning of May 24 and then return to Havre about 6 p.m. for a barbecue and street dance that will last from 8 p.m. to midnight. Music will be faced away from residential areas.

City Council voted to allow the street to be closed.
