Folfers throw frisbees at tournament

Eight competitors signed up to participate in the 13th Annual Tucker Montgomery Folf Tournament at Montana State University-Northern Wednesday.

The word folf is made up of the words "frisbee golf," as the rules are similar to a game of golf. Contestants begin some ways away from a metal basket and attempt to throw their disc in the basket in the lowest number of throws.

MSU-Northern is home to a 20-hole folf course, named after Tucker Montgomery, a student at the university from 1999 to 2001.

Montgomery was a competitor in the first folf tournament in 2000. In 2001, he was killed in a car crash and the club in charge of the tournament named the competition and course after Montgomery in his honor.

Denise Brewer, the director of student activities, said there is also a fall tournament that is usually a little better attended. Wednesday's wind conditions were undesirable for the game, but competitors still walked the course that wraps around the Northern campus, pitting themselves against the weather and each other.
