Lights ink standout grappler from Alaska

Montana State University-Northern head wrestling coach Tyson Thivierge is adding some more star power to his 2014 recruiting class.

Earlier this week, Thivierge announced the signing of Mhar “Andrew” Caballa to an NAIA national letter of intent. Caballa will be coming to Northern from Kodiak, Alaska, where he was a four-time Alaska state qualifier, as well as an Alaska state champion as a sophomore. Overall, Caballa reached the Alaska state championship match three times, finishing second as a junior and again this past season. He holds the school record of 156 wins against just 24 losses in his four-year career.

“Andrew wrestled for former Northern wrestling alumni Sean Costello.” Thivierge said. “I only got to spend a short season with Sean in my first year at Northern, but if Sean says this kid can scrap, I am all in. Andrew is a grinding type of wrestler and Sean knows exactly what we are looking for here at Northern, and that is those individuals who can pull people into deep waters and put them down.  He is a well-conditioned athlete and will do exceptionally well here at Northern. He is going to bolster up a weight that has had a lot of recent success. We look forward to getting Andrew on campus and starting this next phase of his wrestling career.”

Caballa is slated to wrestle at 125 pounds for Northern. He plans on majoring in criminal justice.
