Stone Child graduates walk across stage

The 2014 class of Stone Child College received diplomas Friday.

The class of 34 students sat in their gowns and caps and listened to guest speakers before receiving their associates degrees or certifications.

Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau was the commencement speaker at the ceremony.

"Getting an education is hard work," Juneau said to the crowd of graduates, families and friends. "It's not for the meek; it's not for the weak."

Juneau spoke of the importance of having tribal colleges on reservations and about the furthering of Native Americans in the workforce.

"You now move on to an elite group of Native American people in this country," Juneau said.

Dawnie Deberry, valedictorian of the 2014 Stone Child College class, spoke after Juneau to give her emotional thank-yous to everyone who helped her along the way.

"We all chose a path to better ourselves," Deberry said.

Robert Simons presented the Goggins Memorial Scholarship to Deberry after speaking a little about his friendship with William O. Goggins.

The award is given to someone who demonstrates financial need, academic potential, promise in the field of writing or journalism, community involvement, a commitment to the pursuit of higher education, and a vision for their future, according to the SCC's website.

Nathaniel St. Pierre, the president of SCC, said more than 500 people have graduated from the college in its 30-year existence.

"We have a lot to be proud of and a lot to reflect on," St. Pierre said.
