Living History highlights the lore of Havre

Saturday is the day area historical attractions combine their efforts to show what life was like in the early days of Havre — or, as is the case with the Wahpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump and Fort Assinniboine — before Havre existed.

Here is a lineup of what will be going on:

• Fort Assinniboine has more original buildings standing from the late 19th century than any other fort in Montana or Alberta. People will be given tours on the Black Jack, transportation named for Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing, who once served at Fort Assinniboine long before he was a World War I hero. Tours start at 10 a.m. and will run every half hour. The last tour will leave at 4:30 p.m.

There will be displays of old-fashioned guns and hides, live music and firearms demonstrations.

• Havre Beneath the Street will show what life was like in the days after the great Havre fires in the early 20th century. There will be gamblers and dance hall girls and meats and candies for people to munch on. Tours start at 9 a.m. and run every half hour.

• Frank Derosa Railroad Museum will have up to six model trains running at the same time. The museum will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

• The Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump shows the 2,000-year history of buffalo hunting on the giant cliffs that overlook the Milk River.

Saturday will offer special demonstration of the ancient form of cooking known as stone boiling. There will be tours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at discounted rates.

• The H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum will be open all day. Its new exhibit will be unveiled and there will be activities all day.

• The Everything Antique Show will have on display everything from antique steam engines, vehicles and farm equipment to quilts, dolls and furniture, featuring Big Bud tractors this year.

The event is free to all viewers and those wanting to display or sell antiques. People can stroll through displays and talk to the exhibitors about their treasures. Among other demonstrations will be the rolling relics parade at 1 p.m. and a threshing demonstration at 2 p.m.

Everything Antique is held at the Great Northern Fairgrounds. Hours of the show are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The 4-H Chuckwagon will be open and serving food.

• The High Line Heritage House will be providing tours 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Known as The Cottage, the house is located at 132 3rd St.

People will get a tour of the house and will learn how to brew a perfect pot of tea. There will special emphasis on trailblazing women of Montana and the Hi-Line.

Need a ride?: North Central Montana Transit will have a bus departing from Town Square every hour on the hour 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
