North Stars split with tough Glasgow teams

After taking on Glasgow for the third time in less than a month, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team continued to find mixed results against the Reds.

In mid-May the North Stars defeated the Reds’ B squad, but fell to the A squad in a home doubleheader. Over the weekend at the Havre Jamboree, the North Stars defeated the B squad for the second time. But just like they did at home last month. Monday night in Glasgow, the North Stars split with the reads, defeating the B team 5-0, but losing to the A team 13-1.

Including going 2-2 in the weekend’s jamboree and Monday’s 1-1 showing in Glasgow, the North Stars are now 7-8 overall this season.

In the game-one win over the Reds, the North Stars were narrowly clinging onto a 1-0 lead heading into the seventh inning. Havre scored one run in the fifth, but didn’t really get things going until the top of the final frame. They totaled eight hits on the game and didn’t feel comfortable in their lead until scoring four runs in the seventh, and stretching the slim 1-0 lead into a 5-0 win.

Gavin Gunderson pitched all seven innings for Havre, and earned the shutout with, giving up just two hits. Gunderson also walked just one batter and struck out another three, while Jeff Miller was huge on offense in helping out his pitcher. Miller went 3-for-3 from the plate and was responsible for three RBIs, as well as scored one run.

Tyrell Pierce and Travis Roth each went 1-for-2, while Gunderson was 1-for-3, David Denny and Ryne Antley each went 1-for-1. Roth and Antley each had one RBI as well.

In the nightcap loss, the North Stars came up with five more hits, but couldn’t come up with the runs. They scored one run in the second inning, but gave up 13 hits and 13 runs. Chris Vukasin and Dan Miller each pitched two innings on the road, but combined for five walks and just one strikeout. All 13 runs were earned runs, as the Reds led 5-0 after the first inning and added three more in the second and five more in the third.

Jake Sedahl went 2-for-2 to lead the North Stars, while Dylan Carpenter, Antley, and Mike Loftus had one hit each. Antley had one RBI.

Thursday the North stars will return home for face Tri County at 5 p.m. at Legion Field for a district doubleheader.
