Celebrating History: 100 years ago in the Hingham Review

We will take a look at the Hingham Review’s July 31, 1914, issue for this 13th installment celebrating the 150th anniversary of the creation of Montana Territory.

A Card

Upon my departure from Montana I take the occasion to thus testify my regard for and high esteem in which I hold the members of my churches, and also others whom I have learned to know as true and devout Christians and friends.

My pastorate her and at other places in Montana has been marked by the cordial support and faithful co-operation of church members and others, and will be treasured in memory as a period of my life upon which I can look out with a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction.

For the many testimonials of appreciation of my efforts in behalf of the church, I extend my sincere thanks, and in going to another field of work, I leave with you my best wishes, that your church relations may be as pleasant and agreeable in the future as they have been during my pastorate among you. My successor comes to you highly recommended, and will be able to continue the work in a most satisfactory manner. May God bless you all.

Your humble servant,

O. J. Norby.

Park Trees Watered

Last Tuesday evening several of our energetic business men were seen watering the Hingham park trees. Although the men performed the much needed duty, they did it under the auspices of the Ladies’ Improvement League. The ladies had a tank of water hauled to a convenient place and superintended the work in general.

City Meat Market Again Changes Hands

Ira Clodfelter is now the proprietor of the City Meat Market, Herman Emanuel having rented it to him last week.

Mr. Clodfelter desires the liberal patronage heretofore shown and we hope that he will make good.

Mr. Emanuel has not decided what he will do as yet.

Will Be A Candidate

Miss Laura G. Lovett, an esteemed citizen of Hingham, has announced that she is a candidate for the office of county superintendent, subject to the decision of the democratic voters at their primary election. Miss Lovett is well qualified for the office and we hope she is elected. She has purchased an automobile and will do some campaigning.”

And here is Miss Lovett’s announcement for her candidacy:

Announcement

I hereby announce that I am a candidate for the nomination to the office of County Superintendent of Schools for Hill county on the Democratic ticket.

My friends and acquaintances know of my qualifications, but for those who do not, I will state that I am a graduate of the University of North Dakota and have done special work at the University of Minnesota, hold a life professional and a Montana state certificate, am a teacher of nine years experience in high school, grade, and country school work.

I would appreciate your support at the primary election.

Laura G. Lovett.

Running for public office was not the only thing Miss Lovett was doing. One hundred years ago, efforts were being ramped up regarding women’s suffrage. Gatherings and speeches were given all across the state urging the support of granting most women the right to vote. The following is complete with misspelling:
