Obituary - Steven Phillip Harvey

Steven Phillip Harvey, 60, of Gladstone, Oregon, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2014, at Kaiser Sunnyside Hospital, Clackamas, Oregon, due to complications from a short illness. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life is planned at his home at a later date.

Steve was preceded in death by his father John Phillip Harvey and his mother Viola Benson Harvey. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carol Leeds Harvey, of Gladstone; his sister, Rhonda Harvey Pourroy, Kalispell, Montana; and nieces and nephews.

The family has requested memorials be made in his name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society or a charity of the donor's choice.

After graduating from Chinook High School, Chinook, Montana, in 1972, Steve served in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1976 with a rank of E-5 - petty officer, second class-. He graduated from Portland Community College with an Associate Arts degree and worked for several years as a drafter for various engineering firms in the Portland area, retiring from Precision Cast Parts in 2009 to take care of Carol, who suffers from multiple sclerosis.

He and Carol were married at St. John Fisher Catholic Church in Portland in 1977. They both loved the outdoors and over the years, traveled all over the Northwest, camping and fishing with friends. He was the master fisherman whether plunking from a small boat on the Clackamas River or deep-sea fishing off the Columbia Bar.

Once, his father-in-law asked him to go out in the afternoon and catch a steelhead for dinner. He did it, leaving everyone thinking it was just that easy and never bothering to mention that some fishermen try for that fish for years before they ever catch one.

He will be greatly missed.
