Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: North Star, Chinook sweep 6C matches

It was certainly a busy weekend of high school volleyball on the Hi-Line. And when the dust settled on the last three nights of action, area teams had reached the halfway point in the 2014 season.

North Star got a big weekend off to a perfect start by going to Big Sandy and winning handily Thursday night. The Knights beat the host Pioneers by scores of 25-8, 25-11 and 25-14 in a match that was lopsided from the start.

Sheridan Spicher totaled six kills and Mackenzie Hansen had nine digs in the win for the Knights. Sam Pester added six aces and Sheridan O’Neil had a pair of stuff blocks. Maddy Reichelt had two kills for Big Sandy, while Cheyenne Johnson tallied two assists and three digs in the loss.

The District 6C East action continued Friday night, when the Chinook Sugarbeeters took down the Chester/J-I Hawks in a rivalry matchup in Chinook. The Beeters, who are undefeated this season, earned a sweep over the Hawks, but it wasn’t easy. Chinook won by scores of 25-20 and 25-19 as C/J-I played tough in the first two games. But Chinook ran away with the third set, 25-14.

Hannah Weber totaled seven of Chinook’s 25 kills, while Cortney Gunderson served up four aces. Mariah Swank added 11 assists and Brooke Nicholson had 15 digs for the first-place Beeters. Allix Goldhahn had three kills, 10 digs and three assists for C/J-I.

The Box Elder Bears also picked up a 6C East win Friday night, sweeping the Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-13. No individual stats were reported for Box Elder, but the Bears did have six kills, two stuff blocks and a whopping 24 service aces in the win. HLP was led by Shelby Denny’s four kills, while Cory Carrywater had five aces and seven digs.

In a District 1B matchup Friday night, the Rocky Boy Morning Stars suffered a loss at the hands of the Conrad Cowgirls. Conrad swept Rocky Boy by scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-20. Jai Lynne Day Child had two kills for the Morning Stars, while Rainey Singer was impressive on defense with 11 digs.

Back in the 6C East Saturday, Chinook continued its impressive start to the season, as the Beeters knocked off Big Sandy by scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-14. In the sweep, Chinook totaled 19 kills and 31 digs, while also serving the Pioneers extremely tough. Big Sandy was led by Cheyenne Pegar’s three kills and four aces, while Lisa Pegar had a stuff block.

C/J-I bounced back from a loss to Chinook with two wins over HLP Saturday in Chester.

In the first match, the Hawks won by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-5, and got seven kills and eight aces by Allix Goldhahn. Madeline Woods totaled seven assists and Erin Wolfe had four digs and 1.5 blocks. HLP was led by Shelby Denny with three kills, two blocks and eight digs.

In the second match, the Hawks rolled by scores of 25-9, 25-11 and 25-10. Goldhahn finished with seven kills and Emma Earl had six digs and five assists. Kiara Iron Man totaled three aces and a block for HLP, which is still winless on the season.

North Star also remained perfect on the weekend by thrashing Box Elder Saturday night in Gildford. The Knights beat the Bears by scores of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-18.

Tylynn Rettig had seven of the Knights’ 25 kills against the Bears, while Graysen Spicher had 20 assists and Sheridan Spicher served up seven aces.

In the 2B Saturday night, Harlem got a much-needed win. The Wildcats defeated Class C Saco-Hinsdale by scores of 25-21, 10-25, 26-24, 23-25 and 15-10 in what was a five-set thriller. Ticia Cliff tallied 17 kills for the Wildcats, while Teche Ereaux had 24 assists and Audena Wing had 18 of Harlem’s 63 digs.
