Havre High's Brenna to wrestle at Grand View

Grayson Brenna has already done a lot with his high school wrestling. And with the 2014-15 season still a couple of months away, Brenna has plenty left to do.

But one thing Brenna won’t have to do during his final season with the Blue Ponies is worry about where he’s going to attend college. That’s because the Blue Pony senior has already got that important detail of his future taken care of.

Brenna recently signed to wrestle with NAIA powerhouse, Grand View University. The school, located in Des Moines, Iowa, is one of the top wrestling programs in recent NAIA history and has won the last three NAIA national titles under head coach Nick Mitchell.

“I sent a letter to them and the coach replied,” said Brenna, who won a state title for the Ponies as a sophomore. “After that, I went out there on a recruiting trip in the middle of September. I was able to work out with the guys and wrestle some of the guys on the team. And I really liked it. It felt like a good fit. And they offered me, and I was pretty excited about that.”

Brenna should be excited, as he’s heading to a program that has been extremely dominant in NAIA wrestling the past few years. But the decision wasn’t necessarily an easy one, as he was also interested in the Montana State University-Northern wrestling program, which is right in his backyard.

“I’ve worked out with them (Lights) a lot,” he said. “I really like Tyson (Thivierge). I think he is a great coach. And I think they (Lights) are a great program, too. But I really wanted to go away to college. To get out and experience something different, and that’s a big reason why Grand View was such a good fit for me.”

And Brenna should be a good fit for the Vikings.

He’s already won a state championship at 105 pounds in 2013, while finishing third in a loaded 120-pound bracket at the 2014 state tourney last February. As a freshman, Brenna reached the 98-pound state title match before falling. He’s also helped the Blue Ponies to back-to-back team titles the last two seasons. Brenna is also an accomplished wrestler on the amateur circuit and has been traveling to big AAU and other junior national tournaments since he was young.

While he has his sights set on one more individual and team state championship this winter, he’s also excited about the future, and his future will be as a Grand View Viking.

“(Vikings) are a top program,” Brenna said. “That was a big reason why I liked it out there so much. They have great guys on the team, I really liked the coaches. And it’s going to be neat to be a part of that program. I’m pretty excited about it.”

Brenna will begin his senior season for the Ponies when the 2014-15 season kicks off in November. It will all lead up to the 2015 All-Class State Tournament Feb. 13-14 in Billings.
