Havre harriers preview Helena

In the final preparation for the Central A Divisional, and the Class A State meet, the Havre High cross country teams participated in Helena Preview Meet to get one final look at the competition before the season’s stretch run.

The preview meet, which took place at the Bill Roberts Golf Course in Helena last Thursday, was held at the same location as the state meet, which will be run Oct. 25. It also had a bit of different format with each varsity runner racing one at a time against their counterparts.

Running against every team from class AA and a number of other Class A schools, the Blue Ponies finished 24th on the boys side of things and 28th on the girls.

Brandon Robertson ran the best time for the HHS boys, running his race against the other No. 1 runners in 17:32 to come in 29th place.

“Brandon ran a 17:32, which is what he has been trying to do,” HHS head coach Darci Heninger said. “He ran really well, and if he runs like that and maybe shaves a few seconds off his time he can place pretty good at divisionals.”

Brock Ross ran in the No. 2 group for the Pony boys and finished 32nd with a time of 18:50. Havre’s No. 3 runner Sundance Lodge finished 28th in his race with a time of 18:31.

Then, Austin Jones, the No. 4 runner had a time of 18:53 to finish at No. 32 overall, while the fifth runner for Havre Jamie Lieberg finished 21st in his group with a time of 18:40. Cameron Knapton, the No.6 runner was 29th with a time of 19:31 and the Ponies’ seventh runner Dylan Stewart ran a time of 19:48 to finish 21st.

Havre’s top runner for the girls squad was Rachel David, and she finished with an impressive time of 20:53 to finish at No. 24 in the top group. Morgan Mazurkiewicz, the No. 2 runner for the Pony girls finished 19th with a time of 21:16.

Tori Mazurkiewicz, the third runner for Havre, posted a time of 23:55, good enough for 33rd, while the normal No. 4 runner Rainey Stoner did not compete due to illness.

Rounding things out for the HHS girls was the No. 5 runner Marca Herron finishing 30th with a time of 24:32, Maya Reed finishing in 24:12 to come in 23rd in the sixth group and Meggie Zook, who in the seventh group finished 31st with a time of 26:31.

“I thought that we ran well, I think almost everyone had their best times,” Heninger said. “But I think that if we are going to place really well at divisionals that we are really going to have to work and get our pack times down.”

The Ponies will run again this Saturday in Lewistown when they compete in the Central A Divisional. The meet will get underway at 10 a.m.
