Havre school board receives state award

At the Havre Public School District Board of Trustees board planning meeting Monday, the school board spoke of the award they received at the Montana Educators Conference Thursday and looked forward into the future of the district.

Two school boards in the state are recognized for excellence every year, and this year Havre and Billings took the prize.

The school boards are graded on a criteria of three areas: policy work, infrastructure and innovation. The Havre school board won it because of their major revisions in policy, innovation with their support of technology in the district and infrastructure with the numerous construction project to the district’s schools.

“It’s a pretty neat award to be be one of the two boards to be recognized,” said Andy Carlson, superintendent of Havre schools.

The award is awarded to two districts annually.

“To me, it’s a community award,” Carlson said. “ … It’s a nice reflection on our community.”

He said the school board’s main function is to represent the people living within their district and he thinks they have done a good job doing so.

“They’re very deserving (of the award), and I think the Havre community is very deserving of it,” Carlson said.

At the board planning meeting, the members of the board each spoke of their own vision for the future 15 years down the road.

“This group of trustees want to lead the district so folks down the road can continue to lead the path that’s being built,” Carlson said. He added that areas like technology are difficult to predict, but they spoke of how they would try and be prepared for new technology and maintaining and bettering infrastructure.

“I think it’s important we have those conversations,” Carlson said. “What we don’t want to do is get to the point where we’re not thinking about the future.”

He said they are organizing a group of people for a technology group that would focus on the changing world.
