Black Powder Club holds Christmas Turkey Shoot

The Bullhook Bottoms Black Powder Club held its annual Christmas Turkey Shoot Oct. 12 at the Hill County Sports Shooting Range on River Road west of Havre.

Eighteen shooters participated in the afternoon event with six matches — all five shots each at various distances and positions. Shooting conditions were excellent with temperatures in the mid-60s with light to no wind.

Every shooter dreams about shooting a perfect 50. Well, Dick Hanson achieved that goal that Sunday when he shot a score of 50 offhand at 50 yards with his musket. In 44 years of shooting this is a first for Hanson, who shoots a lot, and a feat that few, if any, accomplish offhand in their shooting careers.

The winners of the matches were:

• 25-yard Pistol: 1st Dick Hanson, Havre, 45; 2nd Tom Brown, Havre, 42; 3rd Pete Huseby, Havre.

• 25-yard Offhand: 1st Pete Huseby, Havre, 43; 2nd Dick Hanson, Havre, 42; 3rd Randy Owens, Havre. 41.

• 50-yard Offhand: 1st Dick Hanson, Havre, 42; 2nd Kathy Lynch, Havre, 41x; 3rd Pete Huseby, Havre, 41.

• 50-yard Cross Sticks: 1st Jim Griggs, Havre, 47; 2nd Randy Owens, Havre, 45; 3rd, Cliff Plum, Havre, 44x.

• 35-yard Special Red 5 Dot Target: 1st Pete Huseby, Havre, 50 (5 hits); 2nd Cameron Griggs, Havre, 20 (3 hits); 3rd Alan Dees, Havre, 20 (3 hits).

• 100-yard Offhand Cartridge: 1st Cliff Plum, Havre, 32; 2nd Alan Dees, Havre, 32; 3rd Kendall Griggs, Havre, 28.

In keeping with the holiday spirit contestants could win only one turkey for the day. Eighteen places were paid out giving every shooter a turkey this year.
