It's Halloween at Havre-Hill County Library

Happy Halloooowee-eeeeeeeeen. Come to the Havre-Hill County Library today and trick or treat for books. From 3:30 to 5 p.m., we will have a haunted room. The children’s reading room will be decorated with a glow in the dark theme. It’ll be a spooky good time so come down and get a book and some scares.

In the spirit of Halloween, here are some ideas for quick and cheap last-minute costumes, with a literary twist:

1. For a "Twilight" themed costume, go goth and glittery (bonus if you remember not to smile the whole night).

2. Wear dark clothes and some fur for a "Game of Thrones" costume.

3. For a Harry Potter disguise you need some glasses, a stick for a wand, and a Sharpie lightning bolt.

4. For a bold twist on Humpty Dumpty, try smashing a raw egg on your head (this is the quick and cheap list… nobody said clever).

5. If you plan on going out on Halloween, bring a snack as part of your costume. Dress as Peeta from "The Hunger Games" by carrying around loaves of bread. Then if you lose the costume contest, chuck the loaves of bread at the judges and run away.

6. If you’re into the classics, how about "Gulliver’s Travels"? Just tie some Lego people on strings and dangle them from your body.

7. The "Scarlet Letter" … need we say more?

8. Do you have a beard? Has it been awhile since you’ve showered? Go as a dwarf from "The Hobbit"! Not showering also gives you that ripe smell of adventure.

9. From the children’s series Captain Underpants, wear a pair of tighty-whities and a cape. If you decide to go with this costume, we suggest you stay inside.

10. A "Where the Wild Things Are" costume will keep you warm in a set of footie pajamas and a crown. Just don’t get too wild.

11. "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is a children’s favorite. You can achieve this look by dressing up in various shades of green and taking just one bite out of everything. You may lose some friends in the process, but at least you were true to your costume.

12. Here’s an easy one for ladies: "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." Just slap on some temporary dragon tattoos and you’re good to go.

13. Did you know that before the movie, "Mary Poppins" was actually a book? The umbrella and carpet bag is very easy, and with the right dress you could be singing Supercal-ifragilisticexpialidocious with the best of them.

14. Another classic, "Oliver Twist," might be the easiest of all. Wear your worst clothes and carry around a bowl. Ask everybody “Please sir, can I have some more?”

15. Finally, there’s "The Giving Tree." Wear brown clothing with green leaves in your hair. Give away your leaves throughout the night. But stop there. You might be tempted to give away your branches or your trunk or something ridiculous like that, but don’t do it! You’ll be left as nothing but a stump and nobody will even be grateful. In fact, they’ll probably sit on you.

If you don’t have your costume picked out already, we hope we gave you some great ideas. Let us know if you win any costume contests. Have a safe and happy Halloween everyone.
