Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup: Beeters roll to District 6C East title

North Star, C/J-I also move on to Northern C Divisional

The District 6C East volleyball tournament wasn’t supposed to be easy. After all, the district is generally one of the deepest in all of Class C volleyball. But this past weekend in Chester, the Chinook Sugarbeeters sure made it look easy.

Chinook came into the 2014 6C East tourney unbeaten, and, after beating the North Star Knights in Friday night’s championship match, the Beeters left the tourney the same way, still unbeaten.

Chinook toppled the Knights in a hard-fought championship match, by scores of 25-17, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-15. It was Chinook’s second straight 6C East championship, and its fourth in the last six years.

In the title match, the Beeters were pushed in the second set, but after that, they never looked back in beating the Knights for the fourth time this season. North Star meanwhile, has just four losses in 2014, and they are all at the hands of Chinook.

The Beeters were led by Hannah Weber, who had a nine of Chinook’s 26 kills in the title match. Chinook also pounded out 19 aces and had 50 digs. The Knights got 12 kills from Tylynn Rettig, while Sheridan O’Neil tallied eight blocks.

Chinook’s march to the title began Thursday with a sweep of Box Elder, by scores of 25-10, 25-13 and 25-17. In that match, Katelyn Neibauer had 10 kills and Weber tallied 13 assists and eight aces. Box Elder, which got eight kills by Tyrah Gopher, as well as three blocks, reached the match by upsetting Big Sandy in Thursday’s opening match.

In the first-round tilt, the Bears beat the Pioneers by scores of 14-25, 25-20, 25-7 and 25-19. In their first tournament win in years, the Bears got 13 kills from Gopher, while Alicia Wolf Chief had six digs and a block. Big Sandy was paced by Maddy Reichelt’s five kills and eight assists.

With the win over Box Elder, the Beeters moved on to Friday’s semifinal where they once again met the rival Knights. And Chinook took care of North Star in straight sets, by scores of 25-14, 25-21 and 25-14. Tylynn Rettig led the Knights with 10 kills, while Mackenzie Hansen had 23 digs and Kiera Miller totaled seven blocks.

The loss to Chinook wound up being the Knights only loss of the tourney. Thursday, North Star took down Chester/J-I in the first of two meetings between the rivals. The Knights won the first match by scores of 25-20, 14-25, 25-11 and 25-16. In the win, Rettig had 16 kills, while Graysen Spicher had 28 assists. Sam Pester had five aces. C/J-I, which beat Hays-Lodge Pole in the opening round, by scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-12, got nine kills, 13 digs and two blocks from Allix Goldhahn in the loss to North Star. Kristina Dahinden also chipped in with two aces and 13 digs.

After losing to Chinook, North Star rebounded to once again beat the Hawks. In Friday’s third-place match, the Knights won another tough match, by scores of 25-15, 17-25, 25-20 and 25-13. The win pushed North Star into the championship bout, and the Knights got 12 kills from Rettig, while Mackenzie Hansen had a whopping 46 digs. In the loss, C/J-I, which wound up third, got four kills, three aces, 14 digs and 3.5 blocks from Goldhahn.

The Hawks got to the third-place match, and into this week’s divisional tournament by beating Box Elder 25-21, 25-21 and 25-21 in Friday’s elimination match. In the win, Goldhahn had 12 kills and 15 digs, while Madeline Woods totaled nine assists and five aces. In Box Elder’s last match of the season, Tyra Gopher had 14 kills and 13 digs and Sayrah Long Fox added five blocks.

The Bears stayed alive by ousting Hays-Lodge Pole Thursday night, by scores of 25-13, 25-13 and 25-20, while the Hawks stayed in the tournament by beating Big Sandy in Thursday night’s second loser-out match. The Hawks won by scores of 25-20, 25-15 and 25-7. In the win, Goldhahn had eight kills, while Emma Earl totaled seven assists and two aces. In Big Sandy’s final match of the season, Cheyenne Johnson had two assists, Jessica Roth tallied two aces and Abby Gregory had seven digs.

With the 6C East tournament in the books, the Beeters, Knights and Hawks all move on to this week’s Northern C Divisonal in Chinook. The tournament gets underway Thursday and runs through Saturday night, with the top two teams advancing to next weekend’s Class C state tournament in Bozeman.
